Sixsense wireless dev kit kickstarter in August
I just noticed this from the Tatical Haptics guys;

Danny Woodall from Sixense, at the Silicon Valley VR Meetup, announces that Sixense will put their wireless dev kit (which they are calling STEM -- Sixense Tracking Embedded Module) on Kickstarter in August, and that it will support tracking up to 5 points (2 of their controllers and 3 other points with pager-sized devices). Their kickstarter will allow backers to get just the 2 controllers, or add up to other tracking modules to their dev kit. They suggested that they would also have tracking modules available separately. — at Hacker Dojo.

- geekmasterProtegeGreat. Looking forward to it.
- PatimPatamProtegeHmmm i must say i've got mixed feelings about this..
On the one hand i think it's great that we will finally have a wireless 6DOF hand tracker and even more important with the possibility to use the extra tracking points for head, body or even feet, all in one system..
On the other hand if Oculus implement their own solution for 6DOF headtracking with a different tech it may not mix well with Sixense STEM or be difficult to calibrate properly (similar to what happens now when trying to use Rift+Hydras). IMHO that's the last thing we want, i think it's very important that both head and hand tracking are unified.
Also if OculusVR decide to release a similar hand tracking system on their own and include it with every Rift as a bundle (which for me would be the ideal solution) that would be a huge blow for the poor Sixense guys.. - SpeedyVTHonored GuestAnd now we thank Nintendo for making the Wii and propelling us further into VR. :) Miyamoto PIONEER! May not have been the first but I can't help feel that the Wii is the stepping stone to consumer VR.
- NighteyesHonored GuestWell there goes more of my money.
- sebastianpHonored GuestI think sixsense should work together with oculus to get a unified solution for VR in stead of every one doing their thing on their side and then letting people figure out how to make their stuff work together. After all the point is to give the people a better experience and developers something to work with that won´t keep on changing all the time.
Right now things are very messy on the VR front there is too many options and their are not all compatible with each other and almost every thing are betas. But I`m confident that we will get there this time.
On another topic, it would be great if you could grab a position sensor, plug it into a gun controller for example and then all buttons and position on the gun are sent to the pc through the Stem system.the way you could have cheaper "wii accessories like controllers" that you only need to plug a stem into it and you are ready for VR. That way you can have an arsenal of stuff for what ever you want, but only 3 or 2 stems. - PatimPatamProtegeI agree that an OculusVR-Sixense partnership would seem like the best thing for both developers and consumers at this point (unless Oculus have a much better/cheaper technical solution up their sleeves), but if this partnership hasn't been announced yet and with Sixense launching their own Kickstarter on August I doubt it's going to happen..
Tricky situation. At least it would be good to know what the Oculus plans are in this regard before the Sixense Kickstarter ends, so that we can make a more informed decision (though i'm probably going to support it anyway). - drashHeroic ExplorerVery excited about this and my wallet feels lighter already.
However, I have to say I'm a little bit confused as to why someone from Tactical Haptics of all people would write about this. Aren't these rivals products? I can't hold both a Tactical Haptics device and this new STEM device at the same time.
My deep wish is that somehow they have joined forces and both products are one and the same, thus explaining why the teaser render for the new Sixense product looks like it has Tactical Haptics style handles. But that's probably super wishful thinking huh? - lucsasakiHonored Guest

From what I understand the folks at Tactical Haptics are more interested in making their product an add on then a full fledge controller. They were using the Razer Hydra the last time that they demoed their product (VR something, with Cimatic Bruce.)

You can see the 2 Hydra controllers if you look carefully, they are inserted into the handle (You can see some black.) - MrNexyExplorerThis is some very exciting news ! Thanks for sharing :D
- eshanHonored GuestVery nice, but I'm not exactly sure what to do with it. The Rift itself is still wired, so you still can't do 360 turning very well. Locomotion remains the big unsolved problem to me. This would allow perhaps better running in place?
I'm probably not thinking big enough. You guys have any ideas?
