Start learning game development

Hi guys,

I just got my Rift in and am psyched about it! So I bought it as a game enthouiast, but got so many idea's for demo's, that I would love to make them. I'm quite a 'builder' and love to work with software. Mostly I master them quite quickly. i do alot of photoshop, html/css coding, cubase and in the past did a lot with flash/actionscript and 3d max. Still know how to work with it.

I would like to hear from you guys how complex developing for the rift is, with for example unity. Should i give a try, giving the fact that I have a fulltime job in IT, not game related? I can't dedicate very much time to it.

Thanks!

  • Developing for the Rift in Unity is almost like just developing in Unity, that's it.
The OVR team has done a great job with the SDK (I would say after the tracker, the SDK is the best thing Oculus has done), so you can just import the package included in the Unity integration, throw it in your scene and... Yeah, is ready.

With some programming background you could make a simple Unity demo in a few hours. A lot of documentation and demos for fast learning.
So I'll say as long as you have $1500 to spend in case you want to distribute your demos, go for it.

  • Cool, will try the Unity trial I got with the Rift then, and look for some beginner-level tutorials. Thanks for your reply.
  • I'm in the same boat.Creating a scene is trial and error, but scripting is a little more trickier.
Thank god you can find all the needed information on the forums .
