Stereoscopic 3d w/ 2d characters?

Just a thought, but there used to be a technique with Poser a long, long time ago before there were render shaders that did this, but, the theory was like this:

You have a 3d scene, connect the actor to a cube. Decrease the actor's Z-depth to 0, and then animate the cube. Basically what this gave you was the ability to animate characters in 3d space, but also made then 2d. (2D character on a 3d background). This was old school stuff, early 2000's iirc.

Anyways, would the same thing work in a stereoscopic panoramic video (anime)?

  • Flat items are just that - flat. You'll see a cutout cardboard characters. It isn't exactly great looking stuff.
  • That's actually the look I was aiming for ;) The idea is to create a visual novel -themed something with head-tracking and environment immersion.
  • It can be done, though it may be jarring to see the 2D characters against a detailed 3D rendered background. You could experiment with stereo textures, i.e. drawing the character with 2 different angles to get a 3D effect on a 2D quad. However this may be difficult to draw by hand. In theory you could use 3D models of the characters, render out a stereo image, and then paint over it in Photoshop or whatever. Could be an interesting look.
  • Here's a picture of the look I had in mind:

After looking for a sample of the look, it looks like finalToon for 3dsMax can export as a SWF. Then, if all works well, input the animation into the game engine to build the environment, and it should work?

In theory it should work; know of any Oculus Rift emulators? lol. Can't view the scene in stereo/VR w/o the headset
