Stereoscopic Google Earth

There is a website that has a side-by-side version of Google Earth (http://earth-api-samples.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/demos/stereo/stereo.html) that allows one to view Google Earth in 3D by crossing your eyes. Is there an app that will just do the Oculus Rift distortion on such things? I know there are apps that do this with videos and games and stuff, but this website is none of those. As I recall, it uses the Google Earth Plugin to display its images. It seems to me that the distortion is all you'd need to be able to view this with the Rift and not have to cross your eyes. So has anything like this been developed? If not, would it be very difficult to do? Thanks.

Is there maybe a more appropriate forum to post my question above to?

Maybe if I asked those who are aware that there are no such apps to say there aren't? Or those who think there are no such apps to say they think there aren't? Thanks...

If it's made for cross-eyed viewing, the left and right images would have to be reversed (and then lens correction applied). There is also the matter of making sure that those left and right images have the right separation to feel comfortable for your IPD and the Rift devkit's fixed lens separation, but maybe just maybe there is already a tool that can do all this.

VR Player perhaps? Or maybe the Oculus Overlay can do this? Not sure, haven't had a chance to check.

Let us know how it goes. :)

The creator of Oculus Overlay has just updated the program to add cross-eyed side-by-side viewing capability, and it works very well with the Stereoscopic Google Earth website. Yay! :D
  • Also looking forward to a Google Earth Oculus. I've just tried Deskope with Google Earth full screen and the Leap Motion. No, there is no head tracking but Deskope gives a fairly good 3d experience and the Leap makes navigation pretty fun, but you can only move your head a little to keep the screen in full vision.
  • cool. bit silly i have to reply to 3 posts before i can Make my own. but i understand :)

+1, Just tried Google Earth with Deskope and it feels like you're getting stereoscopic rendering of the environment even though you really aren't. This is definitely the way to go until full integration is available. I'd like to try playing with the Google Earth plugin to see how easy it would be to make a true stereoscopic display with two different renderings, similar to WorldWindVR. Also, I recommend playing around with the streaming KML files from FlightWise.com in Google Earth with the Rift and Deskope.
  • The GoogleEarth application of the Oculus is one of the coolest things I have seen so far.
Happy to see someone beat me to the idea ;)
