Subtitles or not? And how implement them?

Usually a lot of people needs subtitles to really understand what's going on in a game.. especially if the game is storydriven.. and even more if someone doesn't understand the english language he needs subtitle in his own language..

So the question is.. Are the subtitles really comfortable and usable in VR?

I'm working to a game where there will be some dialogs (not TONS of them but just few neither),and if can helpful the game is sci-fi..

There is someway to add subtitles without break the immersion? That's what mainly concern me.. i want the player to be always immersed and i think that floating words could just break the immersion.. and i can't see so much other chances.. maybe some subtitles in the interface itself? I don't know.. :P

Suggestions? Thoughts?

Thanks :)

  • Perhaps implement an "augmented reality" within your VR game... kind of like you see in the Iron Man movies... so the subtitles would just be an "information service" coming from an in-game computer. If the game is SciFi, this might be one direction you could take it.
  • What about speech bubbles like in a comic book? It might break immersion, but I find that reading subtitles will do that anyway.

Also... Remember that text is not the easiest to read in DK2. I have heard it is better in CV1, but I cannot say by how much.
