Suggestions for home made HMD

While I'm waiting for the DK2 I'm looking to do a little project for fun to whip up something similar to Google Cardboard except with compatibility for the Galaxy Note II. Anyone have any suggestions for where to buy lenses? Also any suggestions on casing material. I don't have a 3d printer unfortunately and would like to avoid working with cardboard if possible. Also if anyone has some related tips those are also welcome :D Cheers!

  • I used DollarTree foam board to build my HMD using google cardboard template.
I bought a cheap pair of Walmart binoculars ($9.xx), extracted the lenses from them (60mm focal length).
I had to stretch out the HMD a little, but it was easy to add more foam board and hot-glue.

  • Yeah, foam board seems to be the way to go if you want something a bit sturdier than cardboard that is still going to be fairly cheap. Wood would look nice and work well, but you would need a scroll saw or something for that. No idea on the lenses.
