- mariomHonored GuestWell the cheapest 3D printers I've seen are around $2,000 USD, and they are a little bit crappy. I don't think you can get something able to print the Oculus Rift plastic parts for $120 USD...

if the goal of dk2 is truly to keep cost down:
send out a 120$ 3D printer and the hardware not able to be printed by the current "bare minimum 3D printers" such as cloth strap or silicon chip(or whatever is being used now) and the cost will continue to be below 350$
people could then print or not print their own case that some claim may be getting scrapped to keep "costs" down.
this may seem convoluted but would be better than giving an inferior Development Kit that only has one camera when the main tracking buff for DK2 relies on seeing the rift.
not everyone can dispose of 350$ when buying 200$ 3d printer and making the rift their self would be much more cost effective
What are you even talking about? try to print the rift case in a 200$ 3d printer and come cry here later, if you buy the devkit you want a devkit, not a 3d printer, if you want one go buy one, what you are saying makes no sense, its like you go to buy bread, and they give you dirt and crop seeds instead. - reBoot185Honored Guestx

you can print 4 sections of a box and glue them together and have enough of a case to validate that shipping a 3d printer is better than claiming 350$ is only *barely*enough to cover one camera that does not yet control the goggles wirelessly yet.
USB cameras are 5$ on ebay.. and a 3D printer is about 300$ on aliexpress.
all that is missing is the video screen and the other stuff the printer can't print..
so don't ship us printers.. but don't tell us lies about the hardware costing 350$ when the technology is what the cost is paying for at the moment, too.
please take note of the "if the goal is to keep costs down". also.. think a little bit about how they would probably not be shipping 3d printers but instead giving the option to buy the hardware and put it together your self. because that's just what we're paying for is the assembly.. or lack of assembly as the current DK2 is missing *at least* one camera"mariom" wrote:

i am probably going to go for a 200+50$ printer for the extra size.. it will be a few days before i order.. hopefully in that time Oculus will announce an extra camera being included.. but i assume it will take a few weeks or months before they acknowledge this simple fix instead of claiming they're aiming at a seated position instead of ALL positions.
You forgot that oculus sell HMDs, not printers, if its so easy just buy one and do it yourself, what are you are saying makes no sense, so its not worth to even try to make you think why.
Also the oculus camera its not a webcam, its a high speed IR camera done from scratch, and the case might cost them what? 5$? 10$?, the real price its the OLED screen, the tracker, chips, cables, lenses, IF leds, camera, packaging, etc...
What would you get by printing a 5$ plastic case for the rift, at the cost of 200$?
Also do you think all the game developers are willing to have to expend a lot of time just learning how to mount it, and mounting each rift?
Not to be rude, but i think you are either a kid, or mentally challenged, i hope its the first. - reBoot185Honored Guestx
