Yes, that was my initial thought as well, however getting vibrational strong enough to be felt but that won't impact the sensor and still be affordable seemed like to much of a problem, which is why I am leaning to an audio solution.
Binaural audio combined with something like this http://korfx.com/ could be a really solid solution for collision feedback in a virtual world.
An audio based solution would also be compatible with ODT's and whatever else devices people come up with for moving around in VR. I really like solutions that are deployable across a variety of hardware.
