Turn any camera into a IR depth sensor by Microsoft Reserch

It seems Microsoft has found a low latency and cheap method to track depth using IR. I wonder if this could be adapted to the DK2 IR camera.

  • Man I love Microsoft Research.
It would be fantastic if Microsoft would implement this kind of technology into a new webcam that came with two lens-attachments: one for typical webcam use, and one for IR depth sensing. All you'd have to do is unscrew the typical lens and screw on the IR attachment which would include the bandpass filter and the ring of LEDs.

The main limitation that I could see was the lack of range - it looks like it only works for like 50cm in front of the camera. Perhaps that could be improved with brighter LEDs on a wider ring around the lens?
