Unreal Engine 4 (UDK 4)

Hello everyone,

Currently UDK 3 is the version available for free. Version 4 I believe is available to developers actively making games. Does anyone knows when the free version will be available to those who want to make games for the rift?

Although UDK3 is a very powerful engine and the currently leading on gaming industry, it does have limitations when compare with version 4 and CryEngine 3 when it comes to Lighting and particle effects. Apparently it will be much easier to handle complicated lighting and particles than ever before with UDK 4.

CryEngine 3 does have many of the features of UDK 4 but it isn't "OFFICIALLY" supported.

If there is a thread for this then perhaps anyone can paste the link as a response.

If not if anyone can chime will be appreciated. ;)

  • I seriously doubt Epic would release the UE4 for free any time soon. Unreal Engine 3 was out for quite a few years before they released the UDK. It wouldn't make sense to open this up so soon, since they will likely make a ton of money selling licenses for UE4.
  • It's possible they could release an Unreal 4 based UDK soon although I don't see them doing it till at least 2014. Things have changed in the industry quite a bit since UDK was first released and Epic might need to step up UDK to stave off Crytek and other competitors. We still can't publish to xbox or playstation with UDK, so Epic will still license the full version to those making games for those platforms.
  • Right, thanks mates! I got an eveluation copy on Unigine. I'm still looking at it before committing myself on to use it. It seems to be powerful, but not as user friendly as Cryteks and UDK. It feels it requires more Scripting knowledge that UDK and Cryengine. Any of you have any experience? :D

It makes sense for UDK 4 not to be offering it for free and the reason stated make sense. Are any of you aware of Unigine?
Supposedly it can handle some graphical aspects better than Cryengine 3 such as better transparencies and tessellation.
  • I've been beta testing UE4 for a while, but only recently begun looking at Oculus implementation, but without much luck.

According to Jeff Wilson's Oct Release notes(nov 08), the Rift should be detected and everything should run automatically. However that doesnt seem to be the case for me.

Does anyone know how I implement Oculus Rift Support, and what tools are there to modify the settings?

    Thank you so much!
  • I believe only the ElementalVR sample project has been fully tested with the Rift.

You may want to use that as an example of the integration.
  • Rift is detected and UE4 adjusts the screen/controls accordingly. Unfortunately, I cannot confirm anything else, as a recent system upgrade is preventing my head tracking from functioning (USB port issue).
