USB Foot Pedals

I've been thinking of picking up one of these http://www.ncix.com/products/?sku=77481&vpn=USB-2FS-2&manufacture=Scythe for a while to help with my APM in RTS games. Mainly because of hand injuries which make it painful to reach key combination that use Ctrl or Alt with the baby finger.
It occurred to me though that this could be used to add a simple walking mechanic into a VR environment that might make things more immersive.
Any thoughts or experience with foot pedals for gaming?

  • I just saw a video from the developers of the game Xing: The Land Beyond. It was their first time using the Oculus aswell as with their game. The one guy, as he was running around was actually moving his legs up and down to emulate the effect of walking. I'm not sure if he was conscious of himself doing it but kinda reminded me of what I was thinking earlier. Like the faster you taped the pedals back and forth, the faster your avatar would run in the game.
I'm thinking it might make you more aware of your "virtual self" if implemented well.
BTW these aren't analog pedals like you would use for a flight sim or driving game... they only have high and low state.
I'll try to slap together a proof of concept and test it out when I get the pedals and dev kit.. Hopefully in the next few weeks.
  • I actually tried this out with normal USB foot pedals and... it wasnt as great as I had hoped.

My implementation was that you can "step" when pressing either pedal. So to walk or run, you would have to alternate between stepping left and right, as you would do when walking in one place.

Ingame, the technique worked but it was not really immersive. You are still aware that you are pressing buttons to "step" and therefore, after a while it became rather annoying because you are not used to it and it's not a natural movement.
I think any sort of input type for VR needs to be as natural as possible and in the end, tapping on the floor with your feet to move forward is not (same for leaning on the balance board btw).

However, for games with cockpits, i.e. you have pedals ingame, I think it would be perfect. I think for this generation of VR, where you are limited by cables and assuming no tread-mill setups, the best games are games with a fixed frame - cockpit games - where your ingame player avatar does not move.

I'm looking for  bluetooth pedal that can work with the Quest2 w/o a computer tether.
