Using DK2 sensors to build up New controllers

Hi,

I was wondering if we had enough news from the position sensors used in the DK2 with the Cam.
It would be great if they could also develop independent sensors that can be used to dev new types of controllers, integrated with the rift and part of the compatility that future ganes may have with the Rift.

Meaning that you could buy a set of 20 additional sensors, and some accesories such as a glove, or straps to turn them into VR gloves or suit, reconized by the tracking cam of the DK2...
Or guns, wands, baseball stick (dangerous one hu?),

Oculus Rift team, if you read that, please make it work :) and ship a few additional sensors to simulate our ceativity..

Cheers

  • Really, just strap a rolling ball switch to anything you want, a stick, a gun, a nuclear ICBM and link this into your computer via any means you want. Et voilla, customized input for a cheap price :P
I agree with you in part, but I think a lot of the fun is building your own controllers from scratch
  • It is a really good idea, at least for some time until Oculus VR switch to the final solution for absolute positioning. I think the current solution using a IR camera is a temporal solution because it has a great disadvantage: if you are seated in a desktop or you have something occluding your body it will fail. For example, in a game where you should crouch to see the floor closer, the IR camera will fail seeing your Rift because your table will hide it.

So for now IR camera is more the cheaper of the better solutions, but the best way to achieve your idea is through the use of devices as PrioVR or similar, and I think PrioVR company is working in a future globe. So the question is: waste time and efforts in developing a IR LEDs globe using the future DK2 SDK, or better wait to see what PrioVR can prototype?

Because in later iterations the camera and the LEDs could be mounted on the rift itself. For instance you could implement a primitive LIDAR system in such a way... modulate the LEDs in different intervals and measure the return times to extrapolate the surrounding geometry and the position.
What do you think the USB slot on the DK2 is for? 8-)
