We ALL need a 3D rigged and animated arm and hand!
Of course one of the biggest topics of design discussion with the rift is the importance of hand eye coordination and how it is missing the "hand" aspect by default.
There are a lot of great and very different ideas on approaching feedback (haptic devices, kinect, razr hydra, etc) but they mostly need some kind of representation of the player's hand in game.
I started out thinking just "gee I could really use a well modeled and rigged hand for like EVERYTHING I'm going to end up doing in the rift" but realized that might be a more widespread concern.
Is anyone here a 3D modeler who's interested in solving this problem or anyone who knows some good premade ones? If you put it up on the unity asset store I would totally buy it! There's a few on there right now but almost all of them are gun related and it would be nice to have something more generic.
Also I found this which might be a good start but haven't investigated the download yet: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sIPCsfulTzw

Rigged and with basic animations (hold, point...):

But anyway rigging a hand is fairly easy to do. - ZikejiHonored GuestI would like to see something like this. I'm actually planning on experimenting in Unity once I get the leap motion. I really want to see something like this.

Wow, appreciate it. I know rigging something like a hand isn't too difficult, but I would be coming at it from a very novice perspective and would be doing this kind of thing for the vrjam where I would be more needed to be coding, I would definitely like to learn how to do this when I have more time.
Thanks for the great reference! I'll make sure to pass it on. - KrisperExplorerJust modelling the hands and moving them around is easy in Unity, not sure how you would go about with the Inverse Kinematics required to model the arms too though. Does Unity do that now?
- MrGeddingsExplorerI was thinking perhaps in the future it woudnt be too hard to be able to motion capture ourselves in VR tied to a virtual avatar, now that would be cool. imagine your in a social virtual world and you can create a charecter and are in VR but your movements in rl waving etc can be displayed in the game could be neat!

No, it doesn't. But there're solutions for that, some free, in the asset store. - MickmanProtegeI feel a simple camera attached to the Oculus Rift that tracks arm, hand & fingers would be really useful. This could then animate an avatar hand. Leap Motion is moving in the the right direction but suffers from a relatively low field of view.
I hope that the new Kinect camera will pick up better hand gestures.
As for Unity & hand gestures... check out this little video I made ( Oculus Rift + Razer Hydra ) the I.K was a simple script I downloaded for free from the Unity3D Wiki site. note: the 2nd video of a bat & ball utilises the I.K arm.
As you can see in the video the fingers don;t exactly wrap around the handle... this could be adjusted to accommodate object shapes but I was simply testing I.K arms attached to the Tuscany demo hands.. - mscanfpHonored GuestI'm actually working on a game that needs none of this stuff. It's called "Horrific Great White Attack Victim." Ba Da Bum.
