nobody would buy a dk3 if the specs are not very close to the CV1, and then it would mean the CV1 is already available under the name of DK3. Oculus will not allow that.
so Oculus got the problem to sell DK2 to developpers while CV1 is so close (who want to drop 350$ on an obsolete device ?). But DK2 has not the features of CV1 ! so what's the point to buy DK2 if you cannot test features of CV1 ?
Or what's the point to release CV1 if DK2 is good enough to developp for CV1 ? (would mean there is only minimal improvment between DK2 and CV1)
it is a catch22 situation for oculus and developpers.
So probably sales of DK2 will stop, and people will wait for CV1 and developpers will just recompile apps for new SDK, skipping on new features of CV1 until they know what they are ...
So expect the CV1 to be released with the good old demo we all have already seen.
best move for oculus would be to provide an upgrade kit to dk2 for additional features of CV1.(which are ?)
    This would make everybody happy.
  • There is no reason to release a DK3. The DK2 is plenty fine for development work towards the target platform (CV1). The only benefits that the CV1 will have over the DK2 is that it will have a higher FOV, better display resolution, higher sensor accuracy, and lower weight. All of the upgrades has no impact on development.

The only reason to do an upgrade would be to check for UI element readability and performance costs, but this can be managed.

I suspect the Oculus "input solution" will be a separate product from the Rift, since selling an input device along with the HMD as the only package would increase costs.. not all people that would get a Rift need an input device and already have their own; ie: HOTAS for the sim people. Of course, Oculus should sell a "package deal" that would include both.

I do believe there should be a developer release for the input device though.

oculus needs input for cv1, and that's why I assume they bought nimblevr.

oculus would be crazy to ship headmount separate from whatever nimble is making for them. It would fragment the consumers into 2 groups, with and without input. It is challenging for developers to sell to a fragmented market. This is why consoles succeed, where the PCs fail. You buy a game for playstation, and it is guaranteed to work with playsation hardware. You buy a game for PC, and your experience may vary, lol.

I predict CV1 will have nimblevr integrated, and if they don release a dev kit before launch, then they will have no launch titles
  • They might have a nimble sensor integrated into the headset, but how is that a controller? So it can see your hands (if implemented into the game), but how does being able to see your hands equate into moving your character, using items, jumping, etc..

    It doesn't.

Sony has the wands, Vive has the wands (as per Valve, the steam controller in 2 parts), etc..

Let's say I'm a flight sim / space sim person. I have (I actually do have :p) a HOTAS, foot pedals, voice commands all at my disposal. Why would I want to have that additional cost of having controllers that I will never use be included with the HMD so that it's at a higher price point? I wouldn't! Therefore, any controller based input, from any of these manufacturers, will be as an additional product that you can purchase separately or as part of a bundled package.
  • No DK3 but it would not take much to send out an early 1st batch of CV1s to certain key developers

if they are very limited in quanitity, it could even be a "show us what you did with your DK2 and if you qualify then you are offered an early CV1?!"
