Who here has half-finished VR projects?
I keep talking to other devs that mention all these VR projects they have that are only half-done before they got sidetracked by life or other projects. And some of these projects sound REALLY interesting. Stuff that should see the light of day!
So... how many here have projects or demos in an unfinished state? I'd love to hear some of the things that have been worked on, what's stopping them from being finished, and maybe we can all convince each other to set aside a little time to see them through? :)

- mhzHonored GuestNot half-finished, just slow progress :) Having kids, house and a full time job makes it hard to get any time over for coding VR. I can't discuss any details of my projects but I'm looking at how we can use VR to improve healthcare. I think VR has great potential in this field.
- rupyHonored GuestI think this is an important discussion to have, but more from a open source perspective: share the knowledge gathered during painstakingly long debugging sessions for VR!
We all have mind-blowing projects for VR, but so far nothing is open source.
Why I think it's that way; the benefits of collaboration are often poorer than linear. (In the future there might not be employees, but only people collaborating at a distance with extremely distinct interfaces between them):
In my case: audio, copy, program and test.
I don't believe in having more than one person on one task.
I'm contemplating making my project open source; after it's released, but it's not clear yet.
I'm trying this new thing of letting things take the time they need; I even waste time to let things mature.
I only have one guide: work a little on the project each day; but don't force it, if it doesn't come naturally. - BaseDeltaZeroHonored GuestEvery now and then i get stuck working on my current projects, so rather than get frustrated i play often around with other stuff to see what works and what doesnt in VR, not so much unfinished projects, but im a bit of a tinkerer and have a lot of old non VR 3d models and scenes that i bring into unity to see how it looks, sometimes i buy things from the asset store to check out how other people structure their projects and i often throw a OVR camera in there for fun :)
Below is just a small selection of things ive converted for VR.
This is an unfinished Synagogue by Louis Khan who never got to build it before he died, i lovingly recreated it from blueprints. The way all the arches and structures line up and frame each other is quite fascinating.
A small Japanese house
Human body with X-Ray shaders, this looks quite cool in VR, coding it into something educational might take more time and effort than i have though.
Inside a cell, with this i wanted to split a music track up into individual elements, and apply a different instrument to each of the parts, so as you fly around the soundscape changes and feels alive.
A cave environment put together from the asset store, quite cool, but oh so claustrophobic.

Floating islands that you have to traverse with thin planks, not for people with a fear of heights.
An Egyptian scene
An island that i was doing early vegetation scattering on using rule based distribution (ie, if theres water, dont grow)
The solar system a was playing around with until a certain someone created a phenomenal demo.
(not looking at anyone in particular DRASH!)
A Roman bath, very simple but nice and atmospheric
A scifi spaceship from the asset store, would make a nice stage for a horror, except i seem to hate horror in the rift....
Ant sized prototype, this was quite cool actually despite the crappy models, looking up at giant clovers and house sized insects was awesome.

A medieval town with stuff from the asset store, very cool, but the thought of creating a story and NPC`s made me put this into the too hard basket
If anyone wants to see any of this, give me a shout, and i might do a build of it and put it up. - AnotherCrazyCanAdventurer

Well, I like all of them, but that'd take a while to do. If you can re-create the floating islands, I would be willing to make a small $5 donation for your efforts. - drashHeroic Explorer

That sounds tough. I hope to see your work someday -- I am extremely interested to see what can result from VR+healthcare."rupy" wrote:

I hear you on this. I also think there is a tension between wanting to give things away vs building a career in VR -- in some cases they can't overlap. Monetization of VR in order to put food on the table (and to be able to afford a house near my parents in my case). Fortunately there are already a ton of resources out there for game design, user interface ideas, and game engine tutorials to get people started.
@basedeltazer0 -- whoa! That's some portfolio of unfinished projects. :) All of them are awesome. Maybe a few hours a week you can put some laser focus on one unfinished project and get it out the door. Drain that backlog and let people see how talented you are! - brantlewAdventurerI keep trying to build a full motion and skeletal tracked version of the RedRovr redirected walking system - but unfortunately I keep getting side tracked by trade shows, SDK releases, and hardware prototypes. Ironically - I don't have much time for VR these days.
- jhericoAdventurerI created a blog post about the projects I wanted to work on.
- Homeworld port
- Celestia port (Github repo)
- Stellarium port
- Kindle-like text browser and reading application (video)
- XBMC-like video browser and viewer application
- Augumented virtuality: the Iron Man HUD(video)
I actually keep meaning to turn it into top level page and keep it updated with additional ideas and projects, but I never seem to find the time or organizational skills even for that. - AnonymousI'm also kind of stuck in mid development of my game. I don't even have a DK1, so while I'm developing with rift in mind, it's really hard to imagine what the game will look like in the Rift. I have an early dk2 preorder so I really hope it will arrive soon.
If someone with a Rift wants to try it out and provide some feedback, please PM me. - moltonExplorerbasedeltazero, I love your artwork, you gotta do something with that ant thing, that would be awesome.
my half done project there's a link to in my signature. I'm working on it practically whenver I can, Planning a DK2 demo. Anybody else planning on making a DK2 demo when the new SDK is ready? I'll probably have to wait till August to release it though wouldn't want to release it without testing it properly. - drashHeroic Explorer@jherico, I like the projects you've wanted to port. :)
@brantlew, bummer. I hope you get more time for your own VR experiments!
@rickdangerous, your game looks neat. The "remote flashlight" approach is genius and really plays with shadows in a big way. Feel free to PM me with a build anytime, and I'll give you feedback.
@molton, looking forward to your DK2 demo!
