Will this spec be pretty future proof?
First off, thanks in advance for any advice ;)
Okay, so... I'm having a couple of PCs put together for Oculus and also some other 360 deg video/VR stuff, for work.
I'm looking at the spec below and wondered if anyone currently using DK2 thinks the below spec will be pretty decent both in terms of the current need and also future-proofing for the next couple of years to 3 yrs.
One thing I really kept changing my mind about was the CPU, going from the 6700k 4 core vs the 6 core that I (think!) I decided on below... Partly on the advice of the company I'm buying from (happy to say who I'm buying from, but not pasted yet in case it's seen as advertising!).
I'm pretty confident the GPU is a good option, but just wanted others thoughts (SSD for a data drive may seem odd, but I'll be moving the PC around at times, so prefer this for robustness/lack of spinning platters & head crash risks).
Case: FRACTAL DEFINE R5 BLACK QUIET MID-TOWER CASE
Processor (CPU): Intel® Core™i7 Six Core Processor i7-5820K (3.3GHz) 15MB Cache
Motherboard: ASUS® X99-A: ATX, HSW-E CPU, USB 3.0, SATA 6 GB/s
RAM: 16GB HyperX FURY DDR4 2133MHz (4 x 4GB)
Graphics Card: 6GB NVIDIA GEFORCE GTX 980 Ti - DVI, HDMI, 3 DP
Main OS Hard Drive: M.2 SSD Drive 512GB SAMSUNG SM951 M.2, PCIe NVMe (up to 2150MB/R, 1550MB/W)
2nd Hard Disk: 1TB Samsung 850 EVO SSD, SATA 6Gb/s (upto 540MB/sR | 520MB/sW)
Optical Drive: DVD/BLU-RAY Drive 24x DUAL LAYER DVD WRITER ±R/±RW/RAM
Power Supply: CORSAIR 850W RM SERIES™ MODULAR 80 PLUS® GOLD, ULTRA QUIET
Processor Cooling: Corsair H100i GTX Hydro Series High Performance CPU Cooler
Thanks again for any advice!

- EliteSPASuperstar3 years is quite long time for VR, that setup is good enough for next year. Nvidia´s Pascal GPU is around the corner.
Anyway, if you´re buying that machine for VR, I will recomend you to wait until the VR devs are released to maintain a minimal FPS (90 at least), the price of the GTX 980 ti will also drop.
Cheers. - cyberealityGrand ChampionLooks good to me.
- Mike_GHonored GuestThanks both for your reply :)
I should also add - can't wait unfortunately (at least, no longer than 2nd Jan!) as need to start with Oculus for some work-related stuff that we need to start testing asap, so I'm just trying to get the best I can now (for the money), whilst trying to future-proof as much as possible.
What do you guys think the the CPU choice instead of the 4 core 6700k? - RoasterRising StarYou can overclock that 5820 quite a bit. Some have claimed 4.7 ghz, but that's where mine crashes every time I run the oc wizard. I settled at 4.1 ghz, with a 185 w power output. Temperature is the limiting factor, so I'm considering a larger radiator. I have a corsair H90 setup with dual 3k rpm 140mm fans and water in temp still rises to 88F in a 77 degree room.
The six core chip should be better than four running faster. - Jokergod2000Heroic ExplorerThat's pretty much my rig exactly. Pickup the Zotac GeForce GTX 980 Ti AMP! Extreme version of the video card. pretty much the fastest single GPU card on the market. I love the thing. I'm hoping I can get some life out of it but I may look at Pascal when it comes out if it's 25% or more faster. PS. I'm running 4.5GB overclock with no issues (Corsair H80i water cooled).
- Mike_GHonored GuestThanks again to everyone for their help!
I'll message the supplier I'm talking to, see if they do the Zotac GeForce GTX 980 Ti AMP! version ;)
Cheers! - Jokergod2000Heroic Explorer

- Mike_GHonored GuestAh okay, cool - thanks for the tip!
Where's the QVL to be found, so I can check Corsair models etc?
Thanks :)"thewhiteambit" wrote:

side note ... I used memory from the Asus list, DDR 4 rated at 2800, but the board won't boot if it's set higher than 2400. YMMV
