Mixed Reality with Passthrough: Where to Start? Released Yet?

In the following news release (https://developer.oculus.com/blog/mixed-reality-with-passthrough/) the article states "Today we’re excited to introduce Passthrough API Experimental—a way to build and test apps that seamlessly blend the real and virtual worlds and open up new possibilities for mixed reality experiences. Available in our upcoming v31 SDK release" ... "We’re excited to see all the mixed reality experiences you build with Passthrough! Additional details, sample code, and documentation will be available to developers with our upcoming SDK release." -- for more info it points to these forums... but not finding anything here...

So -- does anyone here know where to get started?  Is this SDK released to developers yet or not?

  • Not yet; but I'm sure they are working on it if it's part of the next API release. I'm definitely excited for it as a XR Dev using the Magic Leap in the past, if I could have a dev tool like that but for $299? That would accelerate the crap out of things. I could get several devices for the cost of one ML headset.

Agreed -- I own most every VR/AR device (including both Hololens 1 and 2) -- and there's a place for Hololens with the clear passthrough lens -- but if Oculus does this right, they could own a large part of the AR market overnight.

The messages above are confusing though -- so thanks for the sanity check as I couldn't find anything else substantive about the SDK and how to use it... they need to clean up their messaging.

Ok -- here's the skinny... Reached out to Oculus Dev support and the very nice rep let me know the following -- wanted to make sure anyone else who searches this up in also in the know...

"The latest version of our integration is v29, v31 has not been released. I don't have a date on when this version will be released. When we have a date/have released the integration, you will see a blog post for it."

Don't think I'm alone in confusing v31 of the software on the Oculus (which is released) and the v31 of the Oculus Integration SDK to which they elude -- keep an eye on (https://developer.oculus.com/downloads/package/unity-integration) -- they're currently (as of this posting) on v29 -- so TWO more versions to wait for...

Very helpful info, lancewlarsen - thanks! Looking at their version number on the pull-down on the page you linked - it looks like they frequently skip versions.  I'm cautiously optimistic that they will skip v30!

  • They just released it! Just follow lancewlarsen's link above!
