Asked for 'Open' version of my app.

I have an app I've made for an upcoming event, for which Samsung are sponsoring a large number of GearVR devices. When I asked them for the device IDs so that I could include them in my build they told me that I need to provide them with the 'open' app. The reason cited was that the GearVR devices are retail devices and that my app needs to be included in their Oculus App configuration. Otherwise it will keep reverting to Oculus Home.

I have not heard of this, nor know what I need to do - can anyone advise? What is an open version? (This is developed using Unity 4.6.7p3 & Oculus Runtime 0.6.1.0).

  • It sounds to me like you are being asked to give them a version of your app that doesn't require any specific device ID.

Right. Is that possible? I thought the only way to do that was to submit via the Oculus Store and let Oculus publish it?
  • As far as I know, the only way to do this is to submit to the Oculus Store.

In an IRC channel someone mentioned that when submitting, Oculus will initially modify the app so that it can be installed on any device, and then if you want, you can request to publish it. Otherwise you can take the modified app, which is then open for all devices.

Is that correct - its a two-step process?
