Editor Play, Game = black screen
Does anyone know what the cause for the Play and black screen issue is?
This has been reported on the forum here for over a month now, with numerous SDK upgrades and fixes. Yet this problem still persists. Sometimes it can be hard to test scenes and tweak screen space effects by having to build each time, as we have no real-time DK2 feedback to test with.

The only way I can consistently replicate on my end is within player settings > Enabling 'Use Direct3d 11'. When this is checked I receive a black screen. When unchecked the scene works normally.
Can confirm:
With "Use Direct3D 11*" not ticked, DK2 in game mode works fine.
With "Use Direct3D 11*" ticked, DK2 in game mode = black screen. - InfiniteHonored GuestUpdating to OVR 0.4.2 Game mode now works in DX11 mode. I have not updated my firmware though.
Although Game mode is significantly darker than it should be? - CubicleNinjasProtege

Awesome to hear this worked for you. Are builds free of this black screen as well?
I'm using OVR 0.4.2 (and did for this weekend's test) and see the black screen only in builds when Direct3D 11 is checked. - AnonymousNot applicableJust wanted to chime and say that even with the new 0.4.2 update we are still getting the black screen of pain in Unity. It only happens with dx11 checked so we have had to revert back to dx9 for now.
It usually is ok for a certain amount of time but if you resize the game window it will invariably turn black and will need a Unity restart to fix it. We are getting the same behaviour on 3 machines here.
Laptop with GTX 765M & intergrated intel 4600. Windows 7
MacPro with windows 8.1 . Firepro d300
Laptop with GTX 780M & intergrated Intel gpu (haven't got the serial to hand). Windows 8.1.
Hope this gets fixed soon as it's a real blocker.
cheers
Matt - sprocketHonored GuestSame thing here on a Mac Pro running OSX, Unity 4.5.3, latest firmware and 0.4.2. Happens regardless of settings. Scene plays normally but game view is completely black.
- AnonymousNot applicableWhen I don't check "use direct x 11" unity crashes when I press play (On unity 4.5.4, with gtx 650m). When I check this option Unity doesn't crash and everything appears to work fine until I try to move or resize the game window. When I do that the screens goes black.
I have been struggling trying to get the rift to work for a few days now and so far no luck. Oculus people, please do something about this since as it is its useless.
Also, the hdmi cable that shipped with my unit is faulty and showed lots of red and green pixels. - InfiniteHonored Guest

Yes no black screens. DirectHMD no problem. Maybe 1 out of 10 plays of the .exe I will get a crash but if I try again it starts. No black screens now. - dogukanerenelHonored GuestBlack screen on editor;
Unity 4.5.2f1
Mac book pro 15inc retina display
2.3 GHz Intel Core i7
16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M 2048 MB
OS X 10.9.4 (13E28)
No black screen same mac on bootcamp with Windows 8.1 pro. - CubicleNinjasProtege

Nice! Appreciate the info. - ChiaraStellataExplorerFYI I posted a workaround for this issue in this thread:
viewtopic.php?f=37&t=14739
It just switches to monitor mode when using the Editor Play and the headset remains inactive, but it's sufficient for testing a lot of things.
I experience random behaviour very similar to Gerald and it rarely works. In particular it seems to always fail if I try to start it with Maximize on Play, and thereafter will never work again until I restart Unity, perhaps because I have a 4K monitor. I'm on:
Windows 8.1 Pro x64
GTX 780 Ti
GeForce 344.11 Driver
Unity 4.5.3f3
