Just Starting: Out Unity 4 or 5 (free)
Just starting out today:
No unity experience
No oculus development experience
Should I start with Unity 4 as most the discussion and examples are in that version, Or start right out in Unity 5?
I already have unity 5 installed, and I cant get the Tuscany unity project to work right, or maybe it is?.. hard to know.
I already fixed the "world" issue..but
There is a big pink blob where the grass should be.
I cant see it on the Oculus when I push play, but maybe thats expected as the instructions sorta of sugest I have to drag it to the oculus window and go full screen.. which I presume means I need to be in extended mode.. but then again, maybe Im completely missing something that would be obvious if I was using Unity 4.
Your thoughts. Sorry if this has been covered 20 times...

- cyberealityGrand ChampionFor the pink terrain thing, you can to click on the terrain, click the settings gear icon on the right, and then make the material "Built in standard" instead of "Built in legacy". However, I still haven't figured out how to fix the lightmaps.
- wheatgrinderExplorerThanks that fixed my pink terrain!
sounds like your for staying with 5?
Do I develop in extended desktop mode and move the game window over to the oculus to play test? - wheatgrinderExplorerFor the next noob:
Yes, go extended mode just like the instructions say.. even for unity 5. - cyberealityGrand ChampionTo answer your original question, Unity 5 should be fine for desktop development (we're working on getting mobile up to speed shortly). There are a few small things you need to tweak, but overall it should work.
- wheatgrinderExplorerThanks,
Yes I have settled on Unity.
Besides fixing the "RenderMode.World" issue in the code, what other tweaks need to be made?
Everything seems to be working ok, with the exception of turning off mirroring. If I do that, my frame rate goes to .5 fps or less.
