Setting up the Oculus Rift in Unity Free
Hey guys!
A friend and I worked on an instructable for setting up the Oculus Rift Unity Integration for free:
http://www.instructables.com/id/Set-up-the-Oculus-Rift-in-Unity-Free-Version/
[Edit]
Hey! Until I have a fully DIY version, I'm going to remove this instructable!

Doesn't this breach the Unity user agreement? - virrorExplorerDon't think so, i have never read that its illegal to put files in folders, but i might be wrong.

That's a cute way of putting it, probably more accurate to say it's putting files in folders in order to gain the benefit of a Unity Pro feature without having to pay for it, and encouraging others to follow suit. Seems pretty clear to me this is prohibited in a few different places under the license wording, and is certainly annoying from the standpoint of someone who honestly paid for their Unity Pro license. - boone188Honored GuestIt is basically doing just what Veirio does. Its not like you are getting the features of Unity pro. There's nothing wrong with this. I have no idea why anyone would get upset by this.

Didn't realize Vireio gives you functionality that is supported in an existing paid version of software but unsupported in the free version.
Since Unity Pro has OR support and Unity free does not, and given the Unity Pro 4 month trial itself, OR support is clearly a Unity pro feature that is intended to be paid for - so you are getting a Unity Pro feature by using that method. As for not understanding why anyone would be annoyed, some people might not agree with ripping off Unity and encouraging others, the software is obviously a huge undertaking and they already provide a version for free. Respecting others' IP and license agreements, 'eff me, right? Since this is a 'developer' forum we should be especially sensitive to those issues.
Do what you will, but saying there is nothing wrong with it is not really defensible. - boone188Honored GuestThere are plenty of other methods that could be used to pipe tracking data into Unity. I have seen people pipe tracker data into the free version of Unity through UDP. I used that method to get WiiMote tracking data when I was a student. It worked well. There is certainly nothing wrong with that. Using a DLL isn't much different. Obviously nobody will want to release something using these methods. Rift support isn't a Unity Pro feature, RenderTextures are.

This. Ony reason that Rift support is a Pro feature is that it requires RenderTexture.
If you are worried, mail them and ask. - CaineHonored Guest

The only reason? If this was accurate, don't you think Unity would have endorsed the workaround or offered it themselves? If someone can't afford or don't want to pay for Unity Pro there are free alternatives (like Torque).
Where do you draw the line? So it's ok to workaround to get rift support, why not get the Unity pro water effects for free as well?
I wouldn't care to do this if it was just you two but since so many seem to argue against the obvious and encourage others (the breach of the EULA), I will go straight to the source to clear this up and will report back. - CaineHonored Guest

Coming from a lawyer, who's primary function is to perform "mental gymnatics/hair splitting" to prove a point, I'm assuming that's a complement :) .
