Unity Free for Oculus Mobile Development

Hey everyone,

Just to let you know that we’ve made available a new version of our Unity integration for mobile development that works with Unity Free!

You can find the updated Unity plugin along with details on how to unzip the files at the following link.

https://developer.oculus.com/downloads/#sdk=mobile

Without some of the optimizations that Unity Pro provides, such as batching, it may be challenging, with Unity Free on mobile, to achieve the kind of framerate that good VR requires but this very much depends on your use case.

Hoping you get the time over the holidays to build something great!

All the best from the Oculus team.

  • The file was updated but (for reasons I don't understand) the upload date and version number are the same.
  • If we are already running 0.4.4 with Unity Pro is there any good reason to grab this?

I think Unity Free was the only major addition, but it probably wouldn't hurt to upgrade if you want.

I can compile my project, create APK, install APK... however upon running on note 4... it crashes. I noticed the unity ide required me to install android sdk for 5.0.. however the phone runs 4.4. Maybe this is why ?

If you're already on Unity Pro there is no need to get this update for the Mobile SDK.

Please also remember that for Gear VR development, you still need to have hardware that supports development with the Mobile SDK. Follow the setup instructions included in the SDK documentation. In particular, you will still need to create an Oculus Signature file before building and running your apk.
  • Ok no problem, please don't hesitate to keep us informed :) Thanks !
