Will a 120hz monitor fix the 60hz cap in extended mode

I was wondering if I can get a definitive answer on this..

I'm working in Unity 5 (window 8.1, nvidia 980) with the Oculus in "Extend Desktop to the HMD" mode, and fullscreening the game viewport on the Oculus so I can tweak the inspector while the game is playing. My monitor runs at 60hz so the Rift is clamped to the juddery 60hz. I don't want to run the Rift as my main monitor, and it won't let me overclock my lcd to 75hz. My question is : will getting a 120hz monitor allow me to run the Rift in extended desktop mode at 75hz?

I was thinking something like this: http://overlordcomputer.com/collections ... 0oc-glossy

or would it be best to get an overclockable (to 75hz) monitor? or do you think this will be resolved in an update soon?

thanks!

  • 120Hz won't necessarily help unless it can also do 75Hz.

I'm using a 30" 60Hz Dell monitor, but it can do 75Hz at 1280x1024, which does help with some games.

I was wondering if the Rift would run capped at 75hz if the main was at 120hz, but guess not.. So the only option is to try and find an overclockable monitor that can run at 1080p/75hz? Working in the Unity editor at 1280 would be painful..
  • Why dont I have this issue? I have two old 60hz monitors.

Maybe I do have this problem.. how can I check?

    Thanks

    - put the DK2 in extended mode
    - create a game window and fullscreen it on the dk2
    - hit play then spacebar with the oculus integration to see the menu and it will show you the FPS at the top..

if anyone else is having that issue the Overlord monitor in the link above just came and it works.. 1440p at 75hz which the rift matches in extended mode. Unity dev is perfect now.

and besides that the monitor is just gorgeous (save the silly logo on it), highly recommended
