[Gear VR] Foliage doesn't work

I "painted" rocks on my terrain (not Landscape). Works fine in ES2 preview in PIE but doesn't render them on the device.

Original thread: https://forums.unrealengine.com/showthread.php?115279-Foliage-and-dynamic-direct-light-don-t-work-on-the-device

Bug report: https://answers.unrealengine.com/questions/442184/gear-vr-foliage-doesnt-work-on-the-device.html

Could you please poke Epic to fix it ? (unless I am missing something)

  • @vrdaveb have you tried using foliage tool ? Does it work for you? (and if it does, is there something special needs to be done to enable it for mobile)
  • Alright, foliage works with 4.12.4, but causes major fps drain. I don't know yet whether it's due to improper culling (instead of culling per instance it treats foliage actor as a single surface), or something else (maybe polycount is massive as it is).

Still, just like HISMCs, foliage renders black with static lighting.

    Looking at it!

Basically one "direction" where fps drain is coming from is dithered LOD transition. That could be actually a major contributor to poor performance using HISMCs and foliage. Unfortunately there is no way to turn that off to confirm (and see if without dither foliage and HISMCs perform well).

Of course all of that doesn't matter if we can't have HISMCs and foliage lit by static lighting (lightmaps).
