[Gear VR] Masked materials don't render - bug?
This is what I've discovered: https://forums.unrealengine.com/showthread.php?107733-Bug-Masked-unlit-material-doesn-t-render
Is it a bug or limitation of the platform?

- rpalandriExpert ProtegeHello!
I tried to repro on my side and was unable to do so, the mask masked everything after its clip plane and nothing before, as expected (screenshot below).
What sphere/hemisphere mesh did you use? I'm thinking you may have a backface culling issue if the normals are facing outbound. I used the SM_SkySphere mesh with a scale of 0.03.
Please feel free to zip/send us your project if you can't figure it out.
(screenshot also in http://imgur.com/dk1eVtE ) - motorsepMember@rpalandri who are "us" ? :) (asking because I don't see "staff" next to your nick)
I made hemisphere in Blender, with inverted normals. It shows up in SM5 model preview in the Editor, but not in ES2 preview and not on the device. I doubt it's backface culling issue as it shows in the Editor with SM5 preview.
As a matter of fact, if I change "masked" to "additive", it works in ES2 preview and on the device. - rpalandriExpert Protege"us" is Oculus, unsure why the staff icon isn't showing up.
Masked works for me in both ue4 preview and on the device. Which version of UE are you running, and with which phone? - motorsepMemberNow the staff icon is showing! :)
I am using 4.11.1, Galaxy S6, Android 5.1.1 and whatever latest updates for Oculus software Oculus propped to the phone.
I will upload project to Google Drive and will link it to you in PM after I get off work in about 2-3 hrs (might be too late for today). Thanks! - rpalandriExpert ProtegeSounds good to me. Can't repro on my side, but it would be good to know if we've got a masked bug running around unnoticed. I also am running 4.11.1 with an S6.
- motorsepMemberI PM'ed you a link.
When I opened project today and switched to ES2, UE4 recompiled shaders and I was able to get masked material showing in ES2 preview. However, on the device it was still a no-show.
Then I accidentally updated my phone to Android 6.0.1, but still got no material showing :( - motorsepMember@rpalandri Have you had a chance to look at my project?
- rpalandriExpert ProtegeI'll take a look as soon as I can and will update via PM and on this thread :)
- motorsepMemberThanks a bunch!
- rpalandriExpert ProtegeHey!
As explained in the PM, I wasn't able to make the inverted hemisphere work with the blueprint system that you had based on the FirstPersonCharacter template. By placing the hemisphere in the scene itself and putting its coordinates to the exact coordinates of the camera, I was able to get the masked layer working as shown on
I'm sure there is a nice blueprinty way to lock that to the camera's movements somewhere. I'll talk to the UE4 devs about this bug, as I don't think this is limited to GearVR, as least not in the rendering.
Thanks for reporting, and I hope this workaround is sufficient for you at least for the moment.
