Oculus version of UDK | system requirements?
Hi Everyone!
I've had my Rift for about 2 weeks now and I've had a blast testing out all of the games and demos that are currently available. Needless to say, I think that this is definitely going to switch things up (or at the very least provide an alternative) when it comes to how we consume our games and entertainment.
That being said, I was eager to start working on my own little demo using UDK but to my surprise, even when I test the default map which contains only 2 bsp objects (a cube and a floor) and the sky, my FPS stays around 32fps at all times. This makes looking around a little unpleasant and it's obviously not something I would want for an actual demo as well.
I don't have the fastest computer in the world but I do consider it to be decent enough so I was wondering if anyone else had this same experience and if there is anything hidden in the settings that might be causing this? Keep in mind that I'm able to run pretty much all modern games at their highest settings without any problems.
I have an intel i7 3770k with 16gb of ram, GeForce GTX 650 Ti as my video card.
Thanks!
edit: this only seems to happen when I select "play on PC" to see the scene. When I choose to play the same scene in the editor, I stay at a constant 120fps. Unfortunately, it is my understanding that we must choose "play on PC" to correctly view the stereoscopic view...

- cyberealityGrand ChampionThat's strange. I believe your GPU should be able to handle it.
Do you have any frame-limiting software installed? No sure what else would cause that. - OrganicHumansHonored GuestHi there!
We seem to be having the exact same problem, 120fps with PIE, 30fps with Play on PC. This is just with a blank install of the Oculus 09 UDK playing on a blank map.
Alex our programmer is suggesting that it may be a memory leak in the current build. Either way, developers can't really do much with this release while it is running at 30fps without any added content.
I hope to see this issue resolved or at least addressed soon, as the Oculus team have been doing a fantastic job with the integration so far.
Thanks for your time,
Garth
Organic Humans - cyberealityGrand ChampionI was not able to reproduce the bug, but I have informed the software team about this issue.
- PatrickVRHonored GuestFirst of all, thank you very much cybereality for your prompt responses to our posts. It is very much appreciated and makes navigating through issues much less frustrating.
After playing around with many settings without any luck, one of my colleagues suggested that the issue might be related to my monitor setup. Basically, I am using a dual monitor setup as well as my rift which basically makes it a triple monitor.
One of my monitors is hooked through DVI (monitor 1), one through HDMI (monitor 2) and the Rift is hooked to my second DVI port (monitor 3). What I would then do is duplicate monitor 3 to monitor 2 and everything worked perfectly when I was testing all of the numerous demos.
However, when I started using UDK, the problem I mentioned above would occur. So I deactivated my second monitor and simply duplicated my monitor 3 (the Rift) to my first monitor. Sure enough, that seems to have fixed it as the scene in "Play on PC" now runs at a solid 62 fps (I believe the framerate is capped which is why it isn't higher).
Garth: Could you confirm if your team was using a similar setup?
cybereality: Would it be possible to confirm if any of this makes sense to your team and explain the exact cause of this behavior based on the setup?
Thank you,
PatrickVR - artyom17Expert ProtegeYou can 'uncap' fps by 'uncapfps' console command.
- seliweHonored GuestI'm experiencing this exact problem too since upgrading to UDK 0.2.4. Frame rate hovers around 30 - 35 fps in the rift only. Was running much faster in the previous UDK release.
Just got the single monitor + rift.
Happy to answer any other questions on specs/setup. - GhostshipExplorerSame here with Ghostship AFtermath and CDF ghostship. Ghostship on normal monitor runs fine with nor rift, but playing through the rift really chops the framerate down. I am using a 3 year old system (AMD Crap Bulldozer, 16gb memory, and an ati 6970 graphics card. This also leads me to think that when the new Hi-def rifts are available that our game probably wont even run on my 3 year old system, hence the pre-order offer to raise some funds to get a new system as our current one is literally on its last legs and has very little life left in it.
I am using the 09/13 build of UDK, is there a later version?
We will be releasing our first title Ghostship Aftermath around easter so are there any planned sdk updates for UDK ? - cyberealityGrand ChampionWe are still working on the UDK, but I can't say when there will be any update.
- Thoth_The3xMHCP PartnerFor people testing on a default map with just the cube: try a different scene. The base cube mail is extra laggy, probably because you're rendering to infinity in each direction. I haven't had problems with other scenes like epic citadel even on my laptop.
