Polycount literally doubles the moment AppSW is enabled. What's happening here?

What the title indicates.  I have stat RHI up to confirm and the moment I enable AppSW, the polycount in the scene doubles.  I haven't the foggiest idea why this would happen.  Is this a glitch with RHI, or is something else happening here?  Your insight is greatly appreciated.
