Test Stereo3D without a Rift?
Hey VR Heads!
I had a question for the Oculus team: is there a way to enable some of the Oculus integration (SBS 3d, distortion) without a Rift connected?
With the version of UDK I was using, I would boot up what I was working on with RealD enabled. It was useful for investigating UI layouts and text size, and also just to see how things looked in SBS 3D. However, it seems that RealD is not included in the Oculus UDK.
I have been mucking around with the config files and the UnrealScript files (Oculus.uc, Stereo3D.uc) and haven't found a clear way to simulate the SBS 3D. Is this just a cut and dry detected/not detected situation going on in the untouchable source code?
It would be great to get a preview of how things will look while I wait for the dev kit to arrive!

I used to use the iZ3D drivers, because they let you force 3d for any program that outputs 3d graphics. - But it seems they've gone out of business.
That's a pity, because it was equivalent to forcing 3d in the graphics drivers, and it supported everything from side-by-side, multiple monitor output, top-bottom, horizontal and/or vertical interlace, as well as anaglyph and equivalent technologies.
That would definitely help with this kind of stuff...
You can still get their software: http://www.iz3d.com/select_download - but only anaglyph 3d is supported.
Edit: Correction, the download available is a 30 day trial, after the 30 days are over, only anaglyph 3d support still works.
(Though a quick check on their forums shows you can apparently delete a registry key to reset the trial period. Since the company literally no longer exists, I guess that's the only way to keep using it. It feels a little wrong though, but it's either that or find something else.)
This used to be the recommended software to use if you had an AMD graphics card.
AMD also lists this now: http://www.ddd.com/tridef-products/tridef-experience/
But I haven't tested that, so I have no idea how well it works, or what it costs.
I'm disappointed now, because being able to force just about any arbitrary 3d output format on pretty much any game was quite amusing.
I used to use colorcode3d glasses for this, because they're dirt-cheap (similar to anaglyph glasses, the cardboard variety costs about €5 for 5), and still have a small degree of colour response.
Also, the output mode for it was supported by iz3d.
I guess I'll have to find an alternative now...
But in principle it would accomplish exactly what you're looking for.
(and if they were still in business they'd probably have an output mode for rift headsets at some point...) - DycusHonored GuestIn our UDK, you should be able to use "stereo on" and "hmdwarp on" in the console.

that doesn't work on mine. says command not recognized. Are you sure it doesn't need a rift to get that working? - CymaticHonored Guest

I recieved the same response, thus my assumption that a rift is required. None of the oculus or stereo3d console commands are recognized. Enabling these modes through config has no effect.
A third party program is something I have not tried, will look into iz3d when I get home. - DycusHonored GuestYou've gotten the UDK integration from the downloads section, right? Just making sure.
- Jbishop216Honored GuestI don't have my Rift yet and was not able to use these commands either. I also get "Command not recongized". I'm just assuming whatever is needed to utilize these commands is turned on whenever I plug the Rift in.
The only other possibilities I came up with are my hardware doesn't support it or the other version of UDK that I have installed is conflicting with the Oculus version. - InscothenExplorer

i uninstalled all udks versions i had and installed that version.
i can see the oculus related engine.ini sections but it must rely on the rift to be able to activate stereo in the console. I guess i'll have to wait till my kickstarter DK arrives. - CymaticHonored Guest

Absolutely. Direct from this site. I have the oculus.uc and stereo3d.uc files in the default classes, and the config options for those files were already present in udkgame.ini. - danielblnHonored Guest+1 on being able to use the stereo stuff without the Rift, in order do some preliminary performance testing and play around with it. I'm an international backer, so I have some time to kill. I tried the config settings but alas they did nothing for me as well.
- AgentElrondHonored GuestI can also confirm that those commands don't work, so it seems impossible to test the stereo rendering without a Rift. I too will be waiting another month or two before my Rift finally gets delivered, so it'd be nice to get a head start.
