Meta Link Stuttering & Yellow Border on Showing Desktop (Windows 10)

Initially it was in beta testing, but today they rolled out an update to the main, and now my stutters seem like I have the half of framerate of 120 hz with spikes, and when I turn on the screen display a yellow frame appears on my moninor like it was in OBS without DXGI method screen capture. I believe this is the main reason why the stutterers appeared. Meta updated the screen capture method and possibly the capture sending to the Quest headset, and now the frame rate is unstable at all. I tried to find a way to disable the new capture method but I couldn't find anything like that in the registry. If you have the same stuff for now please share this

My Specs:

CPU: Ryzen 7 3700X
RAM: 64GB
GPU: RTX 3060
SSD and so on

  • Have some news. I turned on the console and noticed that frames are being dropped. Something is causing massive frame drops in the new update

  • Rolled back to version v81.0.0.930.254 instead of v83....., now there is no yellow outline like in OBS and wired quest link works fine even at 850 mbps bitrate. Back up your Oculus folder because these "dudes" don't know what they're doing with their updates

How did you Rolled back?, can you post a link (google drive or something) to download the files for v81 desktop app? Thanks

Can you please upload the files needed to DOWNGRADE from v83 to v81 for Meta Desktop app? ... Thanks

I’m experiencing the exact same issue with the yellow frame indicator and severe stuttering, especially in SteamVR games—making them completely unplayable. It’s extremely frustrating, especially since I just upgraded my graphics card and everything was running smoothly before the recent Link updates.

I’ve tried uninstalling version 83 and reinstalling 81, but it automatically updates back to 83. Even version 81 isn’t as stable as the earlier releases.

For reference, my specs are: Windows 10, RTX 5080, i7-12700KF, 32GB RAM.

Has anyone found a solution? Meta, could you please assist with this issue or provide a link to download a previously stable version?

You need someone who has v81 installed and has not yet updated to v83. Then you just need to temporally disable OVRService in task manager in Services tab, and copy/replace all the files from the old "..\Oculus\Support\oculus-runtime\" version to the new one and everything will be fine. At least I see this as the only way out of the situation right now. The new version has become significantly stupid with bitrate higher than 200mbps even on good gpu that have no issues before update. Good Luck!

Anyone can upload those v81 files to a google drive or something to download it?, just while we wait for Meta to fix this mess

  • I found that after the last Link update, some of the internal Link settings have been changed. Have you tried using the OculusDebugTool to check your Link settings? I had disabled Asynchronous Spacewarp and Sliced Encoding, but the update re-enabled or changed these settings and caused severe problems for some of my PCVR games until I set the settings back to what I had previously.

Unfortunately there are no new options that could bring back the old rendering method or something to fix issues. The new version simply complicates the process and for some reason the geniuses at Meta/Oculus decided to release this update without prior testing ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The only setting affecting everything it's the bitrate ... before the update you can get upto 960mbits without any problem, now around 550 mbits start the problems. Lower the bitware below 500 or 400 and will be fine, but that of course it's a BUG on v83 desktop app. Something it's very wrong.

  • Seeing the exact same issues. I also agree that this is likely a matter of the newer implementation. You can also see confirmation of the frame drops by opening Oculus Debug Tool, enabling the performance overlay, and setting the performance overlay to Oculus Link.

I have just noticed that this issue goes away entirely when lowering the bitrate, e.g. from 700Mbps to 100Mbps. This is not a proper solution, as Quest Link was able to operate at 700Mbps on my system with no hiccups until this update.

The default is 200 Mbps, so there is no guarantee that setting a much higher bitrate will always work no matter what version.

I’ve tried the settings in the debug tool, sliced encoding etc. but the stuttering still occurs, does the yellow frame around windows occur with windows 11 and can it be turned off as I believe that’s the source of the stuttering. Hope META fix this issue asap as PCVR is now completely broken

Decrease the bitrate to about 350. Also make sure that ASW isn't forcing 45 fps. You need to check the ASW setting regularly, as it keeps resetting.

Yes, that's good, but do you know that it's a v83 problem? ... v81 you can use up to 960mbits without any stuttering nor any problem with an amazing image quality because it's less compressed. So, we need Meta fix this v83 or next v84 bitrate problem. We don't NEED to be LOWERING the bitrate to FIX this problem that wasn't there before.
