Severe Performance Regression After v81 Update – Virtual Desktop & Tracking Broken on Quest 2
Hi,
I’ve been having major issues with my Quest 2 ever since the v81 update rolled out. I’ve owned this headset for years, and none of these problems existed before v81 — the update immediately broke multiple features.
Here’s what I’m experiencing:
Controller Disconnects
Both controllers randomly lose connection during gameplay (every ~20 seconds). This never happened before the update.
Hand Tracking Not Working
Hand tracking either fails to initialize or becomes extremely unstable.
SteamVR / Virtual Desktop Microstutters
Virtual Desktop performance has dropped drastically:
- Constant microstutters
- Unstable frametimes (only on headset; PC frametimes remain normal)
- Inconsistent motion smoothing
- Dropped frames even in simple scenes
This is on a setup that previously ran flawlessly for years.
Battery Life Reduced
Since v81, battery drain is noticeably worse even when the headset is idle.
What I’ve Already Tried (none of it helped):
- Factory reset
- Re-pairing controllers
- Resetting guardian and tracking data
- Changing codecs/bitrates/framerates in Virtual Desktop
- Disabling hand tracking, Passthrough Home, and WiFi scanning
- Testing different WiFi channels
- Resetting SteamVR settings
Every fix that normally works did nothing — these problems started only after v81.
Request:
Is Meta aware of these regressions on Quest 2 since v81?
Is there a hotfix or upcoming patch planned?
At this stage, the headset has become nearly unusable for both PCVR and standalone use. Any updates or acknowledgment from Meta staff would be highly appreciated.
