Steam vr stutter

Ever since I updated to version 81, whenever I connect my headset to the PC via Link cable, the FPS in SteamVR games keeps going up and down and won’t stay stable — even though the GPU headroom in the Link Debug Tool shows around 60%. However, in games that don’t use SteamVR, everything runs smoothly just like before. What could be causing this issue?

  • What kind of PC are you using? Like your GPU, CPU, and how much RAM? Also make sure you don’t have too many programs running in the background, especially if your system’s a bit older as that can cause stuttering in SteamVR.

I have an RX 6800 XT and an i5-13400 with 32 GB of RAM, and I’ve been using a Meta Quest headset for PCVR for about two years. I’ve never had any performance issues before (of course, there were some problems that appeared after updates, but they usually got fixed in later ones). However, I’m sure this is some kind of bug in version 81, and I don’t know when they’re going to fix it.

It doesn’t matter whether I move the resolution slider all the way down or all the way up—the FPS keeps dropping to around 60 and then going back up to the target frame rate, repeating this cycle over and over. As I mentioned, this only happens in SteamVR. When using Meta Quest’s own OpenXR runtime with the same settings, the problem isn’t nearly as noticeable

  • Yeah, that really sounds like a bug with version 81. Your specs are solid, so it’s not a hardware issue. If you can’t manage to fix it, try using ALVR as I’ve been using it and it runs way smoother on both Air Link and Link. You can even keep your FPS steady at 120 no matter your specs.

I've tried using ALVR, but I couldn't find the settings that work for me. All the settings I've tried make the game so stuttery. Is there anywhere I can find the best settings?

All i did was make sure my bitrate was good if you have good internet make the fps the highest but don't but graphics to max so the faster your internet is the better quality I also used info from this  ALVR settings Reddit

  • I just updated today and noticed the same problem. I think it is trying to use Air Link because my router is wifi 6 not 6e. The stutter seems to be the same as Air Link.
