These features and enhancements will become available starting the week of April 8, 2024 and will be pushed to Meta Quest 3, Meta Quest Pro and Meta Quest 2 headsets. Please note that you can find the most up to date release notes on our release notes article and you can check out our v64 blog as well for more details.

Lying down now on Quest 3

Lying down is now available on Quest 3. Kick back, relax and recline for casual experiences including media playback and stationary immersive gaming. You can enable this feature by going to Experimental in Settings and selecting the toggle next to Use Apps While Lying Down.

Once enabled, you can use this feature by laying down and then pressing and holding the menu button to reset your view.

External mic support (Quest 3 only)

You can now use an external microphone with your Quest 3 headset. You can plug a mic directly into the headset’s USB-C port, or use an adapter to connect a mic through the USB-C port. Once you’ve plugged in your external mic, you can switch to it by going to Experimental in Settings  and selecting the external mic.

Keep casting when headset taken off

Previously, when you removed your headset while casting, the livestream would go black. Now when you take off your headset while casting to the Meta Quest app, the stream will stay alive, providing an improved and more seamless casting experience.

Directly Join friends in Horizon Worlds

We’re testing new ways to make it easier to join up with friends in Meta Horizon Worlds. If your friend is online with their location shared and in a public world, you can join them directly from the People app on the universal menu. You can control the sharing of your Active Status on  Quest (learn more) and in Meta Horizon Worlds, where you can also control the sharing of your world location (learn more).

Passthrough improvements

Passthrough is the fundamental mixed reality capability that allows users to comfortably view and interact with the physical world while wearing a headset. Today we are announcing a number of improvements to the passthrough experience that will roll out to all users on Quest 3 with the v64 release.

Improved resolution

We have improved the perceived resolution for passthrough by optimizing the passthrough pipeline. This makes it easier for users to see finer details and read smaller text in the real world - such as notifications on a smartphone screen.

Improved image quality

We have fine tuned the camera processing pipeline to improve color, exposure, contrast and dynamic range in passthrough. This makes color passthrough better match the real world. We have also reduced graininess (aka image noise) in lower light conditions making for an overall more comfortable passthrough experience in a range of lighting conditions.

Update

We wanted to provide an update regarding the scoped storage fix. Although it was implemented in v.63, we also wanted to share that Google has published guidelines for managing all files on a device that supports scoped storage: https://developer.android.com/training/data-storage/manage-all-files#all-files-access

These guidelines offer valuable information on permissions and APIs that application developers can use to maintain the same level of file management capabilities as before the scoped storage fix was introduced. We encourage you to consider these guidelines when updating your apps for optimal results.

Does the initial version of v64 also include the scoped storage fixes from v63.0.0.419?

Nice.

Are any improvements made to Quest Pro passthrough or is it just Quest 3?

just give up out data file back, thats all we want. Half of the users of the meta quest headsets just want the data folder back, thats so simple and easy for us. But no you just gotta ruin it for everyone. Almost half of the top selling games are games that allow and some of them, modding is like 50% of the games. So all we want is out data files back. its so simple, but you guys make it difficult to make up happy.

Today my meta quest has been updated to v64 but there is no lying mode in experimental settings🤷‍:male_sign:

Hi there. But of feedback on the full, non PTC Build I was just pushed.

Lying down mode isn't there. 120hz mode has disappeared from the menu. The universal menu is now wonky, as are menus in other apps, with no apparent way to reset this. People are reporting issues with the mic during casting...and the new passthrough filter is very yellow.

I haven't seen a debris error, but it is concerning that with every build, new bugs appear to be pushed to headsets, especially after the debris USB debacle. Who is testing these builds before pushing them to live?

Lagrik

I just updated to v64, not the PTC. I don’t see the lying down option in expiremental settings. I also don’t see 120hz mode anymore.

What about scoped storage?

How am I supposed to mod my games without it?

Storage data folder are back ?

Still can't access scoped storage. Completely useless update.

LethalxDose

@Das.Bearski There never was a scoped storage fix. It hasn't worked since PTC 6.3 and now we're in 6.4. So they obviously don't care about 70% of the meta community who love modding and expanding their games.

Im not going to "lie down" and take this, bring back scoped storage! bring back modding!

Just noticed the update, and installing it right now.

@Origami4gamin_TTV update me when you can please!

No laying down in experimental, 120 res is gone, passthrough is horrible with ghosting and halos, still as grainy as ever.  And I have a room full of lights on.

MoonstoneWolf7

Oh and when watching certain videos, the videos are extremely blurry, especially the 360 degree ones whereas before they weren't blurry.

HanYolo_15

Yeah still no lying down mode in "Experimental" settings even though external mic mode is there. Also, passthrough seems a little yellow tinted even though clarity may be improved.

As long as Meta doesn't manage to release an update that causes something to stop working, my quest will remain offline.

I believe that if Meta tests an update beforehand, it works like this: if it doesn't explode in 5 minutes, it can be released.

A final never protects against bugs, I don't see the difference to the PTC.

At the moment I'm using the first V64PTC, which is working perfectly for me (after the debris error) and Meta can keep the updates so that it stays that way.

It's a pity that you have to resort to such means and the quest is not allowed to go online, but otherwise the update is mandatory and then there's no going back.

I'm out!

Das.Bearski
Expert Protege

@TheDapperCrab Supposedly it was fixed on v63.0.0.419.

But those on the v64 PTC reported the fix wasn't there. So really curious if the fix didnt quite make it into the pipeline prior to deployment.

Hey everyone! The lying down experimental setting was rolling out separately from the full release, but it should be available to everyone on v64 pretty soon. Thanks for your patience while you wait for it to become available on your device.

@Ryanality Thank you for clarifying.  What about the 120 refresh rate going missing?

Great to see this. Passthrough is a game changer for VR headsets, good to see constant improvements. Thanks Meta!

Is there a recent update out? The version I'm on is Version 64.0.0.484.370 585752815

Runtime Version 64.0.0 480.368.585752889. Right now looking amazing. Too bad about the second update will be rolling out to get laying down setting.

My last message I sent was the update that has the laying down setting. I was looking at my settings, and saw it.

This one arrived fast!  Downloaded and installed today in Croatia (EU).

I love how the passthrough got this better via one update, seems it will get even better and better over time.

I own Quest 2, Quest 3 & a Quest Pro, and as far as I can see this update is really only for the quest 3 ??? As the only change to my Q2 & QPro is the version number..!! Is this the beginning of the end for the Q2 & QPro ? Shame as the QPro is only just over a year old! The worrying thing is this the trend that META will follow ? When the next Quest drops (ie lite) will the Q3 follow the same route ??

The 120Hz toggle was not meant to be there in the first place - it doesn't change anything. 120Hz is still available for apps that use it. See here for clarification:

https://twitter.com/JustRogDigiTec/status/1774858588131148156

I love the laying down feature, but I stumbled upon an issue with it lol. In Steam VR, the controllers won't work correctly because the laying down is on a higher up platform. But overall it's amazing. Keep it off on certain platforms lol

Rant time...!

Laying down mode.. What a useless piece of s**t, why the hell would I use that ?? The best selling game on VR is beat sabre are we now getting so fat and lazy we should play it in bed ? Watching films I hear you shout, oh give over, get a life and go out and meet friends in the real world to watch a film! nothing beats human contact.!  Not to mention the head strap that comes with a Quest 2 or 3 is crap so the first thing most people do is buy a halo strap etc yeah right I want that sticking in the back of my head whilst watch Dune for 3 hrs! NOT! Stop wasting coding time with naff features like this and sort out the mess the UI is and for the Love of god get rid of the manga style **bleep** cats etc in Horizon's Worlds! How old are we ? Do we live in the far East where the Quest isn't even available..???!!!  The best thing about these forums is no one at meta ever reads these posts so you can pretty much say anything..!! lol

Rant Over...! lol

Just for the record, I'm disabled and not able to get out as a lot of other people.  What about the people in nursing homes? Some of those people have no one and not able to get out yet so many are using these headsets now.  The Quest is not just for young well bodied people but for everyone, and so it is nice when these things can be implemented.

MoonstoneWolf7
Expert Protege

To a lot of people in these nursing homes, they have no one as many are just left and forgotten.  Many are bedridden.  I saw it when my Mom was in one for the 6 months before she passed.  If all of this was there for them at that time, then maybe my Mother would not have felt so alone on the days I couldn't be there.

120Hz mode is now enabled by default and no longer a public variable which is good for PCVR.

Now Meta just needs to begin funding PCVR games again.

Asgards Wrath (PCVR) 100x> Asgards Wrath 2. AG2 looks like is was developed in 2008.

P.s. quit asking me if I want to take a survey every 3 **bleep** minutes then forcing me back to the front page when I click no!!!

M0RIATY
Adventurer

I play sitting down myself not laying down! Have you even tried playing a game laying down ?? It makes you feel sick as a dog! Motion sickness is 10 times worse!! Your inner ear that controls you balance knows you are lying down yet your eyes are telling you the opposite!! I've even played games sitting up in bed long before this mode came into being!! So don't start banging on about being disabled or nursing homes and the like, my brothers disabled and I go to him to watch a film and a chat yet we both use VR. Nothing beats human contact, in this world where all we seem to do is isolate ourselves! no wonder the biggest issue in the world today is mental health!!!

MoonstoneWolf7

I don't understand though why it bothers you so much.  If you don't want to use that feature then don't. But why ruin it for those who do want that feature?  People have requested that to be added in if you look at the ideas section.  I don't like handtracking so I don't use it, but I don't come in here throwing a rant about it because I know others do like handtracking.  And good for you that you still have friends or family left.  I don't. And too many shootings out there for me to even go out.  I have 4 lives to be accountable for, if I leave and get gunned down who will take care of them?

MoonstoneWolf7

With that said, passthrough is still as bad as it was.  And I have all lights on and I am using LED lights at 100%.

Lying down mode isn't enabled until you reset experimental functions. Click the reset button under Experimental tab.

And as usual Metas malware-ish web design asked me for a survey 11 times while trying to post this comment. Having to write the same comment 11 times, just another form of censorship from Fakebook

Lagrik

I didn’t have to do a reset. Lying down mode showed up 24-48 hours after installing v64. I do power offs when done using the headset. And once it showed up, it just worked after toggling the option to enabled. No reset experimental features and no reboots needed.

OK I got v64 (non-PTC) updates today on my Q3, QPro, and Meta Link PC app.  Headset version (both are the same) is 64.0.0.508.370.  The Meta Link app (again, not beta) version is 64.0.0.489.367.  After the new meta link app updated/installed I got a red message banner saying to update drivers, which I selected it to do and this then restarted the app.  Usually after meta link app updates I get an initial message saying my rtx4090 isn't supported, but this didn't appear this time.

Tested both headsets out with a few standalone and PCVR games/sims using Link and Air Link.  All seems to be working very well.  My Q3 passthrough def looks a lot better.  I can actually read my phone and desktop monitor now.

I did need to reset experimental options on my Q3, then do the required restart, for the laying down option to appear.  A simple restart might have done the same.  I also noticed that the 120Hz standalone option on my Q3 is no longer in the quest home display settings.  Apparently this is no longer required and it will be supported from standalone apps themselves.  The 120Hz PCVR option is still there of course.

Anyway, as they say, so far so good, lol!  Cheers.

Edit; had a little time so I also updated my basically retired Q2 to v64.  Its version number was a bit different; 64.0.0.512.370.  Tested this out with a few standalone apps and PCVR games/sims using Air Link and these all worked very well.  Once you get used to Q3/QPro pancake lens it's kinda hard to go back to a Q2, but it still works surprisingly well.  I did notice that, unlike the Q3, the Q2 standalone display settings still has the 120Hz option.  Maybe the Q2 still need to enable this for standalone apps that support 120Hz.

I have noticed way more motion blur than before, and I'd say more warping when moving around than with the v63 update.

I'm confused why the second update for V64 😆 I was never on PTC V64. Big update like the second one 😆. No matter, I don't mind it.

Why is there now motion blur in pass through after the second (big) V64 update, that wasn't there before?

@ZotzWylde

As I already posted, V64 seems to be working fine for me, and I don't see any motion blur.  However, I have noticed a few 5Ghz wifi disconnect notifications that I haven't seen before (standalone and with Air Link).  These seem to fix themselves ok, just a bit annoying.  I've filed a bug report on this.

Chiming in to say that just like in PTC V64, in release V64, Show Mixed Reality Objects is no longer present in the Space Setup menu, and outlines of objects no longer appear in VR after using Space Setup to designate those objects to show in VR. Meta has not commented on this change, so it is assumed to be a bug. Hoping for a fix because it was supposed to be a better alternative to the old-school boundary, and now it's objectively worse...

Why will none of the community managers comment on the scoped storage situation?
