Retired Support

These features and enhancements will become available starting the week of April 8, 2024 and will be pushed to Meta Quest 3, Meta Quest Pro and Meta Quest 2 headsets. Please note that you can find the most up to date release notes on our release notes article and you can check out our v64 blog as well for more details.

Lying down now on Quest 3

Lying down is now available on Quest 3. Kick back, relax and recline for casual experiences including media playback and stationary immersive gaming. You can enable this feature by going to Experimental in Settings and selecting the toggle next to Use Apps While Lying Down.

Once enabled, you can use this feature by laying down and then pressing and holding the menu button to reset your view.

External mic support (Quest 3 only)

You can now use an external microphone with your Quest 3 headset. You can plug a mic directly into the headset’s USB-C port, or use an adapter to connect a mic through the USB-C port. Once you’ve plugged in your external mic, you can switch to it by going to Experimental in Settings  and selecting the external mic.

Keep casting when headset taken off

Previously, when you removed your headset while casting, the livestream would go black. Now when you take off your headset while casting to the Meta Quest app, the stream will stay alive, providing an improved and more seamless casting experience.

Directly Join friends in Horizon Worlds

We’re testing new ways to make it easier to join up with friends in Meta Horizon Worlds. If your friend is online with their location shared and in a public world, you can join them directly from the People app on the universal menu. You can control the sharing of your Active Status on  Quest (learn more) and in Meta Horizon Worlds, where you can also control the sharing of your world location (learn more).

Passthrough improvements

Passthrough is the fundamental mixed reality capability that allows users to comfortably view and interact with the physical world while wearing a headset. Today we are announcing a number of improvements to the passthrough experience that will roll out to all users on Quest 3 with the v64 release.

Improved resolution

We have improved the perceived resolution for passthrough by optimizing the passthrough pipeline. This makes it easier for users to see finer details and read smaller text in the real world - such as notifications on a smartphone screen.

Improved image quality

We have fine tuned the camera processing pipeline to improve color, exposure, contrast and dynamic range in passthrough. This makes color passthrough better match the real world. We have also reduced graininess (aka image noise) in lower light conditions making for an overall more comfortable passthrough experience in a range of lighting conditions.

Update

We wanted to provide an update regarding the scoped storage fix. Although it was implemented in v.63, we also wanted to share that Google has published guidelines for managing all files on a device that supports scoped storage: https://developer.android.com/training/data-storage/manage-all-files#all-files-access

These guidelines offer valuable information on permissions and APIs that application developers can use to maintain the same level of file management capabilities as before the scoped storage fix was introduced. We encourage you to consider these guidelines when updating your apps for optimal results.

Looks cool, but the Meta LINK app was also updated but there is no mention of what you did there, no changes logged, so I presume it was just to make it compatible with the V64 on the headset?

One disappointment is the Link app STILL doesn't recognise the 40 series cards and shows them as not being suitable for a 'good' VR experience. Maybe a good idea to get this fixed before the 50 series comes out?

Hey everyone! The team working on this wanted to provide an update to everyone, so I'm sharing it below and updating the original post to include this at the end as well.

Clear as mud, thanks.

So, in layman’s terms, will scoped storage access be granted in the near future?

YES

@TomCgcmfc Thank's for your detailed statement!

I have updated all three Quests (Q1/Q2/Q3), even the Quest 1 with its firmware version 50.
I was surprised at how well it works and that black with their OLED displays...mjam.
But it's old and the resolution is significantly low now, but good for 2019/2020 😉

Anyway...everything else fits what you're saying.

As well as the slight problems with the 5GHz WiFi...
Sporadic connection drops, very annoying while streaming or air linking when that happens.
Hopefully this will be fixed soon.

And yeah, the Q2 works surprisingly well and is very cheap for now.
Really, 200$ oder 250€? That's to good to be true!
Should be a no-brainer for everyone.

Thank your for these updates but the community overwhelming wants control of our storage back. It's really doing us customers a disservice. I have been a customer since the quest 2 launch and I am on the 3 now, and one of the main complaints for apps on the meta store is that the devs do not frequent update their apps with an exception of a few. Being able to have storage access allows us to mod games and bring new life to them. Please include this in a future update...disabling storage access due to "security reasons" and giving us less control of our devices turns US away from the platform more than protect our "data". I hope this message finds you and the dev team well....GIVE US BACK CONTROL OF OUR DEVICES PLEASE.

Really great work on the passthrough of Quest3... I can almost read my computer screens or iphone just perfectly executed fix.

Completely agree with MastaMINDz7! Very well said!

And to reiterate…

As far as I understand, the actual behaviour is wanted by android itself.
It should give the app developer more control about their own apps and their storage.

I understand the wish of "freely" change private property to do what ever you want.
But I also understand, that a developer doesn't want this... in oder to earn money or such.

So it't up to the developer to let changes happen or not, correct?
Or am I on a false way with that?

Updated to v64 a week ago.

Still no layout utility app, Lakeside Peak home environment. Phone notifications still available. MTP notification and option to connect when USB connect still absent.

A minor enhancement that appeared in v62 and went poof in v63 is also still absent: if you had the app library open and you launched app app the library would still be open when you quit the app. Now you have to reopen the app library. At least the Universal Menu stays open. Prior to v62 you had to reopen the UM as well.

In any case it's two step backwards for every step forwards.  No wonder it takes forever for bugs like the large file transfer problem.

Maybe an interesting sidenote to the firmwares for some.
Until v64 (coming from v57) the firmwares for Quest 2 und 3 were identical

With v64 this changes:

- System: 49919070062000510 (Q3)
- Version: 64,0,0,508,370,586682934
- Runtime: 64,0,0,504,368,586682908

- System: 50837850062000150 (Q2)
- Version: 64,0,0,512,370,586789255
- Runtime: 64,0,0,508,368,586789415

Q1 goes EOL with 30th April 2024!
(last firmware-update?)

- System: 49845030399200410 (Q1)
- Version: 50,0,0,198,257,455910822
- Runtime: 50,0,0,198,257,455911078

Before we all head off into the wild v65 blue yonder I thought I'd mention something regarding v64 wifi disconnects.

Since upgrading my wifi5 router to a wifi6 router a few days ago I haven't had any wifi disconnects with my Q3 (standalone or wireless PCVR with Air Link or Virtual Desktop).  My QPro did not seem have this issue.

I upgraded my local internet provider's Telstra Smart Modem 2 to a Telstra Smart Modem 3.

Even though both routers were using dedicated 5Ghz channels, it seems that the Q3 is happier with the wifi6 protocol (wifi5 = 802.11ac, wifi6 = 802.11ax).  I got a reply from the Virtual Desktop developer (G.Goddin) a while ago recommending me to switch over to a wifi6 router for my Q3.  He doesn't recommend going to a wifi6e router (with 6Ghz band) unless you are in a very crowded 5Ghz environment.  Just as well because wifi6e routers are still pretty expensive in Australia, lol!

I've been pleasantly surprised how much better wireless PCVR with either Air Link or Virtual Desktop performs, esp. with flight sims like msfs2020.  Better clarity and lower latency seem to be the main benefits I've seen so far.  This is with both my Q3 and QPro btw.  So now both wireless options work almost as well as Link, using an official link cable connected to my z790mb usb3.2 tyoe c port.  I have recently been relying on Link for sims but now I'll probably be enjoying these mostly with the freedom of being untethered.

Anyway, I just thought I'd mention this because of the Q3 wifi disconnect issue associated with v64 that others, including myself, were reporting.

You disabled the files so now we can't mod and play our games how we want, we modders would appreciate it if you can give us our freedom to mod and expand the limits of our beloved games again

bring back scoped storage! bring back modding!

@Succubus_Eater V65 AND V66 are the lastest Version, press forward on these complaints. Meta have fixed the issues, modding is working. I was able to put discord on my Quest 3, that's modding. Meta pressing forward on stuff over the Horizon.
