I have grown antsy as I await my devkit, so in the meantime I am attempting to create something. I, like many of you, have innumerable amounts of ideas when it comes to VR. When I first ordered the DevKit I was ready to delve head first into the different games and simulators that are currently being developed. I have watched damn near every video on YouTube, and I keep up on the forums here as well as the different Reddit threads. I began collecting and organizing links to all the important videos, as well as saving any Oculus Rift meme I could get my hands on. What I came up with was a simple website to help organize it all for me so I have an easy place to reference when I begin developing myself. However, I cannot help but think of the future of Virtual Reality. I already began to get bored with the idea of games, and started forcing myself to think outside the box. Where can VR really take us? The implications of virtual classrooms for example.
Simply put, this industry is going to explode; at first it will be games. Next will undoubtedly be virtual sex. But past that?
I have the website up now, it is http://vrdatabase.com It is a novice job at best, admittedly. If I could afford to make a comparable site to say; imdb.com believe me I would. However, I do not want to spend the money and time on something that I'm not 100% where is headed. So it is to this collaboration forum that I extend an invite. I would like to create a self-sustaining website driven by the content of both developers and users. Right now, a majority of those interested in VR are going to be the developers, innovators, and early adopters. Shortly after the consumer version of the Rift is available, the tides will turn and there will be a massive demand for VR related media and content.
I think it is our duty as developers to provide the consumers and fans with a place to reach us, a medium if you will. I would love for VRDb to be a collaboration between all Oculus Rift owners, a place where ideas can be shared readily as well as a vehicle for distributing all of the latest Trailers and Demos straight to the consumer.
If I told you I had this all under control that would be a lie. A project of this magnitude is much more than my small team and I can handle, not to mention I want the input of the community (you guys.) So...how about it? If you think this is something at all you would be interested in please respond below. This is still the earliest of stages, and although I have most of it mapped out, I would love to hear from other developers. What would you want in this type of site?
I hope this can at the very least generate some discussion. I believe it's one worth having.
I must say, this is a great idea. Something like that would be very useful, both for developers (to check, if such idea was used) and for consumers (to check what kind of VR experience they can test now, to leave comments, marks, etc.). This can easily become a new IMDb for our projects, if people would like to contribute there.
I will check more of your page after my working hours, when I will be back at home. From my first look - very nice work and great idea! Keep it up! 🙂
Thanks guys. It's discouraging because I don't know what direction I want to take it. Obviously it would be ideal to make it like IMDb, but that would take some work getting developers on board.
I'd like to maybe start with interviews. Would any developers be willing to participate?
if you want an imdb-type site you could start by cataloging video games in general, who made them, etc. starting with popular ones and moving from there on out.
