Oculus setup tool can't connect to server

AlanLiu

It displays "Looks like we can't reach the Oculus server. Please check your connection.". I'm in China. Does Oculus limit the countries/regions which can connect to server.

two years on and the same problem seems to exist, still no fixes?  I purchased and installed the rift a month or so ago, and for a few weeks installation and running was fine, but then it stopped allowing me to download any more VR apps.  Support asked me to uninstall everything which now means that i cannot download the app let alone games!

i have over 13G free on C: and 12G on E: for the apps

I had exactly the same symptoms as you VisOc - Everything was running fine, then it stopped letting me download VR Apps and I also got broken images in the UI. Uninstalled everything but now cannot reinstall due to this error.

I have tried everything on this thread.  Got tonnes of space free on C:, and tried the /bypassHotfixCheck.  I even tried an old version of OculusSetup.exe I had lying around from the previous (working) install in April 2017.  Same error.

What do I do now?

Ok, I've solved it for me.

TLDR; Even disabling all features of my Bullguard firewall / antivirus wasn't enough - I had to terminate the Bullguard processes too.

Firstly, the log file at C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Oculus\OculusSetup.log was the key. In my case, looking in here I saw this:

[Warning] [29/07/2018 13:33:20] Couldn't validate certificate chain: sha1/fiFhOqeFrtamrAuX+rhCdMzb6pA= <- sha1/mmNm77Az5LiEJUbd5+eCB23xhLc=
followed by this:
[Subject] CN=*.oculus.com, O="Facebook, Inc.", L=Menlo Park, S=California, C=US
[Issuer] CN=BullGuard SSL Proxy CA, OU=DevelTeam, O=BullGuard Ltd., L=Heathrow, S=Hounslow, C=GB

So, immediately thought, because BullGuard was mentioned as the issuer of the oculus.com cert (which didn't seem right), that it must be the root cause. I had already disabled all BullGuard features (including Firewall and Anti-virus) but this clearly wasn't enough. One option here would have been to completely uninstall BG, but I thought I would try a more lightweight approach first. So I did this:

  • Changed the BullGuard settings (advanced) to switch off 'Allow BullGuard to protect its components against termination'.

  • Rebooted the machine.

  • Using Windows Task Manager, terminated all Bullguard processes I could find. Some came back, but this didn't seem to matter.

On relaunching the Oculus installer, I now got this as the last line in OculusSetup.log:
[Debug] [29/07/2018 13:44:53] All preflight checks passed.
Remember to re-enable all your anti-virus features again, but note that after re-enabling I can no longer download new VR titles through the Oculus UI - I have to go through the above rigmarole every time.  I hope Oculus + Bullguard can sort this mess out.

How did you solve this in the end because I'm having the same issue on a brand new "oculus ready" laptop which by the way had been running Oculus Rift S ok until I uninstalled it completely and tried to a fresh install on the software.......Now |I cant even download the setup.exe file from there website !!!   So i got the setup.exe file onto a memory stick and put that into the downloads folder and run it but I just get "looks like we cant connect to our server" Ive followed every forum and carried out every update possible.,.........Unbelievable as it was running the day before .....uni stalled it and tried to reinstall ......Nope ....

...me2. Brand new HP Z workstation with heaps of space and power. One reason was also the VR topic to spend the money. On my old i5 it is working, with the new workstation I cant make it work. No server connection.... uaaaahh

...OK, got it now but no Idea what the reason is. I was setting up my new worksation with RDP (Remote Desktop) because I wanted to do it parallel using my old machine. Also installed the Oculus App and started it with RDP. By accident I now used the PC without RDP and it worked instantly..... Days of trying beacause of this difference. Who's the trouble maker? Microsoft or Oculus? Is there a conflict with ports? Does anybody know why this happened?

Hi All,
I know this is a properly old thread but it was the only thread that had my error in exactly, it came up early in the search results and I discovered that a previous fix mentioned in this thread (Add "31.13.95.61       graph.oculus.com" to the end of "hosts" file.) which I had to do previously to get this to work, now breaks the connection as I suspect that Oculus have renamed 31.13.95.61 address or at least redirected it in someway.

to resolve this issue if you are having it now (circa early 2020) you need to remove the "31.13.95.61       graph.oculus.com" entry from the end of your "hosts" file.

TL:DR:
remove  the  "31.13.95.61       graph.oculus.com" entry on the end of your 'host' file.

Hope this helps someone out.

EVERYONE HERE FOR THIS ISSUE...  Note! Oculus changed Host server IP addresses.. So after a lot of hair pulling.. Using the new IP to resolve for graph.oculus.com worked!!!!
Yes, I noticed that IP did not ping either. Was trying to find the Oculus server ip address to change it to. Will try what Dave Smith suggested, 157.240.3.49 graph.oculus.com
