Visuals don't display the first time you launch an app on Gear VR

Issue description:
When we install our apk on to the phone for the first time and launch, we place on the Gear VR and get a permissions prompt ("app requires permission to access photos..."). We click "Allow" then the screen goes black; we can hear the sound of the app but cannot see anything. If we remove the phone from the headset, it says that the app has crashed. If you then relaunch the app it works correctly.

Testing:
We tested this on 30 phones and this error only occurred on two phones. After going out of our mind trying to determine the cause of a bug we have finally found the issue - these two phones were locked to portrait mode. Once we uninstalled the app, set the screen to auto-rotate and then reinstalled again, they worked correctly.

How to reproduce bug:
  1. Uninstall the app entirely from your phone
  2. Set the screen to lock portrait
  3. Install a fresh copy of the app
  4. Launch and put on Gear VR
  5. When asked about permissions, click "Allow"
  6. Screen will go black
This seems to be a bug outside of the developer's control. Can Oculus/Android/Unity please investigate and provide a fix?

Thanks

Final steps in the bug:

6. Screen will go black but sound will play

7. When you take the phone out of the headset you get a message that the app has crashed

If you follow the exact same steps but with the phone screen set to auto rotate, it will work correctly.
