Has someone attempted to split the eye buffer resolution and duplicate one eye on both for far away

What I mean is, save on rendering by rendering only objects close, separately per eye, but objects far enough have the same stereo separation, so they could be rendered only for dominant eye and copied over the other. Would this work?
