4GHz 6-core i7 3930k does not meet recommended requirements

I don't understand how my CPU doesn't meet the specs but the Dell system with an i5 6400 does.

Even without counting the overclock I'm at a significantly higher clock rate, faster RAM, twice the cache and two extra cores. I outperform a 6400 at both single threaded and multithreaded benchmarks. Are they just mad that it's not shiny and new and don't care about performance?

I think the compatibility program just look if your processor is from above a certain generation of core i5/i7 and don't look at actuall performances.

They haven't cramed a benchmarking utility on it, it's just checking numbers.

I think your CPU is fine. It's mostly the GPU that will be the bottleneck of a VR gaming box.

I had the same problem re: the working out if the CPU in my system is fast enough.

The Oculus reporting tool reported it as not fit for purpose.

Current CPU which is quite old...
Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2700K CPU @ 3.50GHz

my motherboard
ASUS P8Z68-V LX

Graphics card
GTX 980

I ran a 3D Mark test (look for the free test version) and anything above 9000 points is acceptable.

I got a score of 9892 which is way above the recommended score.

I'd imagine you're fine also, it's just annoying that they put out this application to let you know if you're compatible but then all it's doing is checking if your model number is over a certain number.

Yeah run the 3DMark fire strike...

I had an AMD 1090t running at 4ghz with a GTX980 and hit a score of 11460... But just upgraded mobo and to a fx8370. But haven't rerun test yet...

Main reason was for more usb3.0 and 3.1 ports

8 months later and the 3930k Sandy Bridge is still considered inferior...Is there an actual legitimate reason for needing the newer CPUs?

It's not so much that you "need" a newer CPU but more that we had to set a target for developers and chose a CPU that felt like it had adequate performance at a reasonable cost. Some slightly older CPUs will actually work just fine, and there is not compatibility problem.

It also has to do with the way we were benchmarking CPUs, using single threaded performance as the mark. Depending on the game or engine, multi-core CPUs may performance better, it all depends. But, most likely, you'll be fine. Thanks.
