Another ‘right earphone stopped working’ post

Just wanted to keep the ball rolling with another “right earphone stopped working” post... Happened to me over the weekend.

Sound failed intermittently from my Rift’s right earphone, and then altogether.

I’ve been in touch with support. Did the song and dance of taking photos of my Rift and Rift box serial numbers, getting a copy of the receipt (since it was a gift), all of that... 14 emails later, and I hear that the Rift is out of warranty and they can’t do anything about it.

Yesterday wasn’t a great day.

I’m an indie developer and have been working with Oculus since early-DK2. This is obviously a set-back.

It seems like this is a common and known issue. During normal use, at any point in the product’s life-cycle, the sound ribbon that goes along the Rift’s arm gets torn. I hope Oculus can:

1. Supply replacement ribbons for people who want to have a shot at fixing themselves
2. Do a hotfix on the design
3. Figure out a repair process that doesn’t involve sending out new headsets, which is obviously super-expensive for the company

If anybody has any advice, I’d love to hear it!

Thanks for reading.

Yes, I just heard from support and after reviewing, they’ve offered to send me a refurbished headset at no cost! Seems like a good intermediate solution. (Well, it’s great for me at least. I still feel badly for Oculus, because it can’t be all that cheap.)

Do you know if self-repair kits or a tweak on the design are coming, cybereality?

Thanks for your response!
