Arizona Sunshine 2 NOT WORKING Airlink and Virtual Desktop

I just purchased AS2 and was very disappointed that it wont work on both Airlink and Virtual Desktop.

Airlink: tracking issues upon launch making the game very jittery and nauseating and my Quest 3 controllers are not recognized, so I am stuck in the main menu. I also noticed that it launches SteamVR even if i launched it in the Oculus app.. this is strange and is probably the root cause (I did not launch any other Steam Game during this time. I restarted PC and AS2 keeps launching SteamVR everytime i run it from the Oculus PC app. Very odd behavior)

Virtual Desktop:

The game launches in flat screen vs VR and controllers dont work. This makes the game unplayable.

1) all other VR games in my Oculus PC app work fine (Asgards Wrath 2, Lone Echo, etc) in both Airlink and VD

2) Quest 3 controllers are connected, with 90% battery.

3) Similar issue is reported by many Oculus users in reddit

4) Quest 3 Standalone is working fine, but i want to play PC version due to better graphics and performance

If this isn't fixed soon I would like a refund because the game is unplayable. I prefer to buy the Steam version instead which I heard works fine.

I just tested the Rift version (Meta store). AS2 does launch using SteamVR if you set the active OpenXR runtime to SteamVR. But setting it back to Oculus OpenXR fixed it.

If your system is already set to the Oculus OpenXR runtime, then something strange is going on. When you start the game and it goes to SteamVR, in the SteamVR settings under OpenXR does it say "Current OpenXR Runtime: Oculus"?

I will add some additional info on the root cause here because I have finally been able to replicate the issue.

Launching AS2 from Virtual Desktop resets the Open XR setting in the Oculus PC app. If you want to play it again on Airlink you will have to go back to Oculus PC app settings > General then set OpenXR to " Set Oculus as active" again.  Or else you will run into the same issue.

If you want to play AS2 on Virtual Desktop, make sure Steam VR is not running in the background. If it is, AS2 will launch in flat screen (not VR).  quitting Steam VR  and relaunching AS2 fixed this.

I saw several posts in Reddit from people having these issues. I hope these solutions will help them.

The Steam version only supports native SteamVR drivers and will always launch SteamVR - but normally if you buy the game in the Rift Store, the game should use OpenXR or native Oculus drivers - and should never launch SteamVR. Is your OpenXR set to Meta in the Oculus Desktop app?

And are you sure you bought the game in the Meta PCVR store?

Personally I use the Valve Index for close to all my SteamVR games, it works flawlessly with optimal performance due to support for native SteamVR drivers - and I use my Rift CV1 for most Oculus games. I have both hmds connected to the same rig, works great.

Thanks for the quick reply RuneSR2.

1) Yes Open XR is set to Oculus not SteamVR.  I never made any changes to the Oculus app config apart from Link sharpening. As mentioned earlier all my other Oculus games launch perfectly in Airlink, only AS2 behaves this way. It is very odd that it launches Steam VR, all other Oculus apps never do that. And i am not the only one reporting this.

2) i am aware of the difference between Steam VR and Oculus app. Been playing VR for over 7 years now. I bought AS2 on Meta Quest 3 store and installed the PC version in Oculus desktop app (cross buy). I do not own it on Steam VR and dont know why Steam VR launched whenever I start AS2 on Oculus App (via airlink).

Thank you, Kojack!  I realized that i had to set Oculus again as active in OpenXR (in the Oculus PC app) and that fixed the problem.  Now AS2 does not launch SteamVR and it works perfectly.  I'm not sure why the setting got changed... maybe due to a recent app update?  Anyway, your reply helped point me to the right direction.

That's just how things work. If a game uses OpenXR, then it will start with SteamVR if OpenXR is set to Steam. If OpenXR is set to Meta, then it will launch through the Meta PCVR Desktop app - and SteamVR will not launch.

I am having the same exact issue here. I just purchased the game on Steam because it was on sale however when I tried to use Virtual desktop to open the game it just goes to a flat screen. I tried the solutions below but none of them worked. So to be clear what do I need to do if I have the game on Steam so there is no way to launch it without steam VR, I'm using virtual desktop to open the game, and I have an Oculus Quest 2.

Hi @iLLPut5AcrossYoEye. We understand the concerns you have with things getting in your way of playing such a great game! We must let you know that, as Steam VR is not officially supported, there is a limit to the troubleshooting options available for related issues. Please follow the troubleshooting provided below and reply back to us with the results.

  1. Ensure the Link PC VR app is setup to Allow Content from unknown sources
  2. Restart your PC, close Steam if it opens automatically
  3. Launch the Link PC VR app
  4. Connect your headset to the PC VR app (Link or Air Link if on a Quest 2)
  5. Wait 3-5 minutes or until you are in your PC VR Home and see your library
  6. Launch Steam, then Steam VR

Steam should automatically detect the headset and open the Steam home environment. It is more reliable to launch Steam VR games from within the Steam VR environment rather than directly from Steam. If these steps don't help you, please reach out to Steam Support. We look forward to hearing back soon. Thanks again,.
