Got the Quest 2, got SteamVR. Connected my PC with the Quest using the 10ft variant of the Anker cable suggested by Oculus, and it's very slow, very fuzzy, etc. I know the computer itself can play the game I'm testing on (Half Life Alyx) as I've borrowed a friend's Valve Index in the past.
Tried a wireless connection using Sidequest, and it works WAY better - can play Beat Saber etc nigh-flawlessly, though our wifi isn't strong enough to handle Alyx.
So I'm guessing the connection has to be the weak point, if performance is lower when wired in. So should I be looking at my motherboard? Connection is better with USB 3 than 2, but not massively.

Hate to break it to you but your computer is bare minimum for link. A 4 gb 970 and i5-3570 are not good enough for half life alyx.
When you use link, you are your using the pc to the fullest, the 9 series graphics card does a terrible job of encoding and rendering at the same time.
why virtual desktop runs better on low spec pcs is because its compressing the heck of the signal and changing the render scale to sub 1.0 (approx a .8 or .75).
A gtx 970 running at 4k (2k per eye) trends at about 30 fps. Thats at full resolution. There is no way in heck you will get a good outcome. You need to adjust your renderscale.

Agh - gotcha.
I am using the lowest res at present, which worked out pretty well on Index. I'm surprised it'd output any different to the Oculus.
I have turned the game resolution down to the same I had the Index at, but guessing that alone isn't enough?
Okay, final plot twist - on my tiny, 4-inch Google USB to C cable, Alyx runs perfectly on the Quest.
So... would a shorter cable save me? :S
how the hell can you test with a 4 inch cable? not much range of motion.
