So, yesterday my Rift started playing up. I was in the middle of a game when, all of a sudden, everything went black. I removed the headset and could see the picture tracking just fine on my monitor. Weirder still, after removing it, the picture then started working in the headset. However, when I put it back on, black again. Today, more of the same, it will intermittently black out. I realised that if I pull the front bit of the headset forward, off my face, the picture reappears, but when I let it sit back over my eyes, it will eventually black out again. There seems to be some tipping point where the headset gets into a position where it loses the picture.
The only thing that I can think has changed from it working perfectly to now is that, just before the strange behaviour, I was using the Rift's microphone for the first time ever.
I've updated my Nvidia drivers and Rift drivers (and opted into the beta), but no joy.
OK so I think I know what might have been causing it, though I don't know why it would have changed all of a sudden. There's some sensor behind the foam surround, in between the two lenses. When I cover that sensor, the pictures appears in the lens, when it's exposed, it goes away. I suppose this is to detect when you are wearing the headset and not.
I haven't damaged or dislodged the foam surround so I don't know why this has started happening.
Can I leave the sensor covered with tape? Will it damage the headset in any way?
