CPU Usage always 100% after installing Rift software

This is a weird one. What I'm experiencing is very similar to what's described here:

https://www.reddit.com/r/oculus/comments/32e7w0/check_your_system_interrupts/

Basically, whatever I'm running, will appear to use all of my CPU, and my fans are running at a higher volume all the time as a result. My system isn't running slowly... and it isn't an Oculus service that is at 100%, but finding someone else report a similar symptom caused by an older version of the SDK has me fairly convinced that the issue is indeed related to the Rift. I haven't tried reinstalling the software yet and I didn't notice it until after playing Eve Valkyrie (I had tried a number of other games before, but wasn't totally paying attention to what my CPU was doing or how loudly my PC was running).

Ideally I don't want to have to redownload and reinstall all the Rift apps I downloaded yesterday, but I'll give that a try if it's felt best.

Anyone else run into this?

I'm running Windows 10 64 bit on an i7 5930K, with the latest Nvidia (364.72) drivers for my 3 x GTX980s.

Help would be greatly appreciated!

I ran into this for the first time after trying Eve Valkyrie recently, and I want to highlight the article linked by pittsburghjoe up above.  The problem is that Eve Valkyrie (and maybe other programs too) changes a power setting to prevent the CPU from idling when it is running, and then fails to change the setting back again when it exits.

You don't need to change any hardware or reinstall anything.  Switching power plans or resetting your current power plan resets the setting and fixes the problem, but a better solution is the pair of commands listed in the article.  You can put them into a little two-line batch file and put a link to it on your desktop.  Then when the problem surfaces, just double click on it to run the batch file.

The commands are:
PowerCfg /SETACVALUEINDEX SCHEME_CURRENT SUB_PROCESSOR IDLEDISABLE 000
PowerCfg /SETACTIVE SCHEME_CURRENT

Probably the easiest fix, short of CCP fixing their software.

Gez this sure freaked me out. I couldn't for the life of me figure out why the hell my cpu was idling at 80 degrees C! This needs to be fixed promptly.

Eve Valkyrie was patched to fix this issue just a couple of days ago. At least it was for me.

I still think Home should correct the setting for people who don't notice, and haven't booted up Eve, but I suppose those are in the minority.

There are 2 issues here, the first was that Eve:Valkyrie was setting IDLEDISABLE to 1, and the other is that the Oculus software switches to the "High Performance" profile automatically. This second thing still happens and should be optional rather than forced (at least let us override the default behaviour).

Awesome, thanks to you guys my computer is no longer going to melt down, burn a hole through the entire earth and destroy some unsuspecting village in China.

Same problem here, i thought it was my graphics card drivers.. I have a big thread over at Geforce Forums.

Nvidia Thread Click Here

I have 100% CPU usage as well, even if i close out some of the smaller apps that use 2%, the usage ramps the cpu back up to 100%.  Changing Power Plan to Balanced did not work.. Resetting "Balanced" to defaults did not work either.. So i cant play this game at all until a patch comes out.

Eve Valkyrie is totally unplayable due to horrible frame-rates.. like 2-5 FPS when i move the ship.. I can look around fine, but when i move the ship (roll, pitch, yaw), the FPS drops sub 10 FPS and starts to make me sick.

We need to get this figured out guys.. The CPU is bottle-necking the GPU

Video i recorded of the stutters and showing low gpu utilization.

How do we fix any of this? Where can we changed Idledisabled=0.. I changed my power plan to balanced but i still have 99% usage and very low FPS

This post provides a fix for the idledisabled flag not being set back.

For the "High Performance" issue, the Oculus software shouldn't be forcing a power profile switch without at least giving us the option to override it. It's a bit ridiculous that this software is taking that level of control out of my hands on my own computer. This needs to be fixed.

Wow, glad I found this thread. It was still happening to me. I've never ran Eve Valkyrie, so it's not the cause. Resetting the "high performance" plan fixed the issue for me also. This was causing my Steam Link to drag like a dog. Wasted a lot of time attempting to figure out what caused it.
