CV1 screens grey not black?

Scott185

Hi all, i have a question to all those who have or have tried a CV1. The black level in my rift are not what I was expecting. Black screens look like a washed out grey colour with light red smearing at the top and bottom when on a blank screen, the sort of look black has on an LCD. I was expecting the screen to be true black, as in not light from them at all when displaying black screens. They are oled's after all and oled's are known for amazing black levels. is this normal?

Ps.
Despite that still loving it.

Nvidia driver installs tend to be flaky.

Trying reinstalling the nvidia drivers using the DDU program, and a clean install.

This solves any number of weird problems we've had while using 3D Vision.

Using DDU is a good point - I always use DDU when I need to reinstall GPU drivers. With DDU you can be assured that you get a clean wipe.

For those unfamiliar, DDU - Display Driver Uninstaller. Get here: http://www.guru3d.com/files-details/display-driver-uninstaller-download.html

Interesting, means that the redness and black levels are a SOFTWARE issue and not a hardware/manufacturing limitation/glitch .... that makes me hopeful.

Everytime I update my Geforce drivers, my HDMI connected projector's display settings get defaulted which means that the range gets reset from "Full" to "Limited". This is very annoying, and it makes no difference if I choose "Clean Install" or not.

It is easy to re-configure though, as the display device is visible in the Nvidia settings, but the Rift is NOT, so I don't even know how to verify if this is actually set correctly.

Did a full Windows 10 reinstall, only installing the latest (Non beta) Geforce drivers and Oculus Home.

Good result: Pitch black surrounding in the 'Change Lens Spacing' app. (Normally I can see the red haze/mist)

Not improved: (Believe these are app errors, possibly the result of differences between the SDK versions, but strange since Oculus should be aware if there are any differences that need correction):

Henry seems to have the wrong black levels, when the studio logo is shown I can see that it is rendered inside a cube due to some heavy artifacts.

Oculus video still has heavy artifacts in the sky on the startscreen, and the ant theater looks terrible.

My feelings keep swinging from one end to the other every hour or so... WHY must my rift arrive in June it is way too far away, why did I not order faster?... I'm glad my rift arrives on June, by then most of these early softwere issues have been fixed...

@Mahtavavarvas - Unless you really like tinkering with software, endlessly reinstalling stuff, having lots of things not working, etc - keep with the "I'm glad I have to wait" thoughts. I honestly spend more time fighting the software than enjoying my Rift. I do love my Rift, but yeah the software is nowhere near mature enough.

BTW I think this screen issue is related to how the godrays got worse a few days ago for me. I think the overall brightness of the screen has gotten increased - that's why blacks are not blacks, and why the godray got worse. That's my theory.

I'm having a very (maybe identical) problem.  780ti, used DDU and fresh "clean" install of Geforce 364.72 but no luck.  Quite a bit of misting, and numerous places where it's clearly dark grey and not "true black" as expected.  I have a Gear VR on Note 5 as well so I'm familiar with it should look like, and I previously had DK2 on this same rig.  It's quite strange because it does appear to be *somewhat* app dependent, so for example "Lost" with the firefly opener is absolutely not dark enough and seems to degrade the whole image quality to a point I have a hard time believing this is what has been demo'ed at trade shows etc.  A mild washing out of colours is also noted.  I do notice that Dreamdeck it all seems quite a bit less noticeable - not sure if this is the app dependency at play, or just content itself.

Also, I can't work out where this Full/Limited range reset option is, but if I'm following correctly it hasn't actually solved anything for anyone.  Here's hoping one of the tech magicians here come up with something great. 🙂

For what it's worth, I know for sure that when I run the Lost video that the background is pitch black, not greyish.  As you note, the firefly coming out of the black is really memorable.

No idea what the determining factors are.  I'm running latest released NVidia driver, not Beta.  Windows 7 because I already have too many tech problems to solve, and I don't need more <glares at win10>.

Hmm, super strange, for me the background is definitely grey/greenish when the firefly approaches in Lost.
This occurs on my fresh install where I do get pitch black in the 'Change Lens Spacing' app 😞
