I sent off a broken Quest 2 on Tuesday, and the refurbished replacement arrived on Saturday. That's pretty great service!
But now I'm stuck. The Q2 gets to the "remove the tabs from your controllers" screen - but won't detect my controllers.
I've tried:
Replacing the batteries in the controllers
Leaving the batteries out for 30 minutes
Holding down the Oculus button + B
Factory resetting the Q2 using Volume Down + Power
Nothing works. And because I can't get past that screen, I can't pair the Android app with the HMD. I've tried:
Restarting my phone
Uninstalling and reinstalling the app
Nothing works. The Android app asking for the pairing PIN, accepts it, then displays an error message.
When I did the RMA, I was told to only send back the HMD - not the controllers. But it seems there's no way to pair a Q2 with controllers which were previously assigned to a different Quest.
Now I'm stuck and Oculus support is suggesting I RMA the controllers!
Is there any way to pair the controllers? Or pair my phone with a Quest 2 which hasn't got any controllers?

Easier fix. Download oculus app on laptop. Plug in headset with Ian. Once headset is recognised by laptop app, check your phone. It will now connect to mobile app and you can update the software.

Thank you for this. I went through exactly the same process (RMA, cannot connect, ect) with Meta. They've said exactly the same stuff to me for the last month. Finally I can use my Quest again.
Lord knows why Meta don't want to acknowledge that your fix exists... I have offered that they can pay me to copy paste your solution into their fixes documentation lol

I heard it was patched with a new app, but I still can't pair it
It seems like an update with only Quest Pro added.

1. Please update the Meta Quest Companion app to the latest version/patches (version 181.1).
2. Please initialize Quest device.

My quest 2 still not workin I cant update , TOTAL XFER 1.0 error at 47% ..
can anyone kindly help with the TOTAL XFER 1.0 error?

XFER 1.0 means that the update is not sticking to the headset. This issue I think is the update file. I had a problem with the v43 file not sticking and I had to find another update file which I did post earlier in page 10 or 11 I think which you could try and to know the file has stuck it should say 2.0 XFER. Then your headset should start updating and work. If my file does not work which I posted in one of the earlier pages then you need to mess with update files of the oculus quest and see which one works for you.
