Hey @TdsJoan!

First off, welcome to the Meta Community Forums, I hope you have a great experience here with us!

Whilst you can download the Oculus software on a Mac, the device would need to be running a Windows 10+  Operating System in order for it to work. Beyond this, you would also need to ensure that your device meets the minimum requirements and system specifications found here!

I hope this helps answer your query, if not don't worry, either myself or another fantastic forum member will be able to help!

Thank you for your response, i really appreciate it! However, if these features are present, it is certain that it will work well on mac?

Hey @TdsJoan

Can I just clarify the device you would wish to connect to your Mac? As different devices may have different requirements!

For example, the link I provided originally is the requirements for connecting a Rift or Rift S device however, a Quest 2 or 3 would have a higher hardware requirement from your device, these can be found here!

As long your Mac meets the requirements for the device, including a Windows Operating System, it should work just fine. I would like to add though, that some users have encountered issues with connecting their device if their Mac/MacBook has an external graphics card.

Any users that have connected their device to a Mac with the necessary requirements have had fantastic VR experiences, I hope this helps!

Hey, thank you again! I want to connect oculus rift with mac (in windows 10). My mac features are

  • CPU: 2,2 GHz Quad core processor Intel Core i7
  • Computer memory: 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
  • Graphics: Intel Iris Pro 1536 MB

with these characteristics of the mac do you know if it will work well with oculus rift?

May i need an external graphics card?

Hey again!

From what I can tell, your CPU and memory should be more than good enough to work with Oculus Rift (as long as the 16GB is RAM) I fear that as you suggested, the issue would lie in your GPU.

Whilst you certainly can attach an External Graphics Card (eGPU) you would need to ensure that your Mac has a  Thunderbolt 3 or Thunderbolt 4 Port.

Many users view the graphics card as the most important component when it comes to the quality of their VR experiences beyond the minimum requirements so I would recommend the best eGPU possible whilst remaining affordable for yourself as they can get quite pricey 😅

I know PCVR specs can get quite complex so I hope I have been of some use. Hopefully you will be able to get stuck into some PCVR experiences soon!

Intel GPUs like the Iris Pro aren't supported by the Rift software (their drivers are lacking Direct Mode, which the Rift needs), you must use a suitable Nvidia or AMD GPU.

However something to be careful of is Mac EGPU compatibility. You can use either Nvidia or AMD as EGPU, however there are no Nvidia drivers for MacOS. Nvidia GPUs should work when booting into Windows for VR, but the whole EGPU won't be of any use when you are doing MacOS stuff. On the other hand AMD GPUs do have drivers, so you could use it in Windows (for VR) or MacOS (for other apps).

I don't use Macs or EGPUs, so I don't know how likely it is to actually work. I see some people on Reddit saying they have Quests running on Macs using Razer Core X EGPUs, but the Quest works differently to Rifts.

Thank you for your help, it is important for me. I read that htc vive pro works on mac. However, if I buy these will i need an external graphics card again?

Thank you for your answer!
