Controller detection broken with Quest 3 v68 update - barely usable now

Brokich

Since the v68 update was installed on my Quest 3 headset, I have began experiencing severe issues with joystick detection - particularly after a short while of using hand tracking mode.

How the issue occurs exactly:

1. I place my controllers right outside of the edge of the play area

2. I continue playing (VRC) in hand-tracking mode for a while (5-10 minutes)

3. I pick up my controllers to resume joystick tracking

4. One or two of the controllers will no longer wake up. They have no outline, and are not detected in the quest operating system itself no matter what buttons are pressed, or if the joysticks are tapped together, or moved in/out of the play area. Sleeping and waking up the quest does not help either.

This was never an issue previously, but now after the update it tends to happen regularly, with no easy way to fix it.

Once the controllers stop waking up when picked up, nothing helps except removing and putting the battery back into the sticks (a massive chore when you use grip covers that need to be removed each time), or a full Quest 3 reboot with the power button.

The problem is very severe and occurs with ease. I get it multiple times per night while playing VRC through wireless virtual desktop.

Everything worked fine prior to the v68 update.

Please issue some kind of a fix!! This is a crippling issue.

After v68 update and controller update, my controllers do not wake up when I place them down while I am using hand tracking. The controllers do not wake up after pressing buttons, resorting to removing batteries to wake up the controllers. I have repaired my controllers and done several factory resets. The issue persists.

Thanks to everyone who has shared this problem here, it helps to point out that it is not our controllers that are broken. It was the update!

To meta support - I kindly ask you to stop suggesting to people to factory reset and unpair controllers - it is beyond clear that the v68 update is the issue, not our controllers, although I understand this is a routine action.

Nobody had this problem, now a bunch of us have it, all while using wireless quest 3, all after putting controllers down for a few minutes. All of us can only fix this by removing the batteries and putting them back in.

Please, focus on fixing the problem, the dev team should understand clearly by now that their v68 update has a showstopper bug, and how to reproduce it.

I sincerely hope a fix is issued before I lose my mind with this problem.

Furthermore, yesterday I also had a problem when double-tapping controllers did not switch to hand tracking anymore. Quest 3 had to be rebooted fully to fix this.

I am scared to update Quest 3 in the future. Just like that, our whole VR gaming experience can be ruined...

Hopefully, Meta will do it right and issue a fix soon. And hopefully they will do a better job at QA with updates. Maybe you should hire me? Got a decade of software testing already 😛

Hey @novazek we'd love to help you out with these issues in our PMs.

Have had this issue on my Quest 2 recently with v68. I've noticed that if I double tap my Quest headset to activate passthru mode, and then pickup the controllers they will wake up. I can then double tap the headset again and control is restored. However I mentioned this to another user with a Quest 3 and this particular workaround did not work for them. Not sure therefore if it is a combination of a particular setting and Quest model.

Edit: I thought I would also mention that a few firmwares back I have also lost thumb position detection on the right joystick, left joystick thumb detection is fine. Just in case it is related and a common denominator. Unsure if that is a firmware or hardware issue though.

Hey there, @grahamjupp! Thank you for sharing your experience! We hope that this helps other people as well!

This also started happening to me after the v68 update.  It is most noticeable when I am watching a movie in SkyBoxVR as I put the controllers down.  Removing and reinserting the batteries usually works, though sometimes it fails again almost immediately.    To work around this issue I have had to enable hand tracking in SkyBoxVR, which is irritating as any minor hand movement can then trigger the menu system in the app.

As noted from the other replies in this thread, and others, this is not an issue with our controllers but with the v68 update.  Kindly fix it and stop just using delaying tactics.

Hi there @Melawen70!

Thanks for reaching out to Meta Quest Support. We understand that you've been having trouble with your controllers on v68, so we're happy to let you know that v69 has been released. Please could you update your headset and then let us know if your controller issues are fixed?

Thank you!

Hi again @Melawen70!

We just wanted to check in to see if you'd managed to update your headset to v69 and this fixed your controller issues? If you're still having problems with it or have any other questions, we'd love to help you out.

I have not as v69 is not yet available on my headset.  When it arrives I will see if it has fixed it.
