Default Download Location Error - Multi User PC Workstation

Hi, please can you advise regarding this (urgent) issue. We work for a University and one of the researchers is using a Meta Quest headset to conduct a research study which utilises a 3D app that was developed using Unreal Engine. Her students need to login to the workstation that the Headset is connected to and when they do this they have to launch the Meta (Oculus) app in order to get access to the Unreal research app on the headset. Unfortunately they are being prompted with an unexpected unknown error when the software asks were the default download location is for the Oculus software (Program Files/Oculus/Software) which we assumed was due to the students profile not being an admin so we manually set permissions for them on that folder but it still results in an error. How should they be configuring this part of the setup? The researchers profile was used initially to setup the software and runs without issue but we need this to operate the same way when the students are logged in with their accounts. Thanks.

Hey @ultrakev75, we understand you're incurring an unexpected error while the students are trying to access the research app and this has caused an unwanted delay for the students to learn in the world of Mixed Reality. We intend to look into this for you therefore we would like to confirm whether this issue is occurring across all the apps in the headsets or this specific developer's app?

Hi, just to clarify there are no Oculus or Meta Apps which have been downloaded to the device so the Software folder is empty and will remain so. When the student logs into the PC and connects the headset to it via USB they have to launch the Oculus app and that is where we are seeing the issue. It's as if it's being setup for the first time and they are prompted to define the path to the Software folder (which defaults to Program Files). We had to uninstall the Oculus application, download and run it again for the student to be able to access the custom app that the researchers have created, This is going to be problem going forward as each student will be collating data recorded in their custom app so they don't want to have to re-install the Oculus software every time one of them has to login. Does the Oculus app only provide continuous functionality on a single user profile setup?

Hey there @ultrakev75!

Just jumping in to give my two cents. As I understand, you are using a single device multi-user desktop which can sometimes cause a few difficulties for users due to differing system/admin permissions. I know you stated before that you gave the students on site admin permissions, I assume this is for an Education account on the desktop? If so, there may be some system security in place that will interfere with the app download as you described above, and a potential solution would be to make the affected accounts local administrators on the network.

I appreciate that this may be untenable on an education network, but it is worth exploring and I would recommend getting in touch with the University's IT Helpdesk/Technical support.

Can I also clarify if you are using a single Meta Quest account and device?

I hope this can be of some help to you, have a great day!

Sorry for the delayed response. They are using a single meta account (the same account that is signed into the headset). The registry fix suggested on the various forums that allow new users to get past the Software Downloads error when they try to launch the Meta app only worked for the first student that logged in, any subsequent student that tries to login can't get past this. The forums are full of people who have encountered this error, some dating back years so it's a problem that Oculus/Meta must be aware of: https://communityforums.atmeta.com/t5/Get-Help/New-Oculus-account-setup-error-OVR88948175/td-p/72012...

For a research environment that has strict security about domain users accounts not having full admin (not that having admin permissions fixes this - I've tried that and it didn't make any difference) what is the correct solution for getting a meta headset running for each user? If we can't get beyond this error is there  way to use another solution to connect the headset to the PC?
