Display not working! (Quest 2)

BabyBones09

This randomly happened  around eight months ago when i turned it on, no background to it whatsoever! Just randomly happened! Whenever I turn on my Meta Quest 2 the display does not work, it only plays the common background music. When we restart it displays the controller pairing screen for 1-2 seconds before going to dark gray and from there all that happens is the controllers buzzing every 5 seconds. The weird thing though is when we try to power it shows the "do you want to power off?" screen but the controllers won't work so you can't choose anything and the display moves in sync with your head moving. And because of this we lost all our games which was about $60 plus not being able to use the Oculus which was tied for my favorite console ever! I would've contacted Meta sooner but this was my first time finding this website. If anyone has a solution please tell me!😭

Hey there @BabyBones09! We know how it feels when the display won't come on, and we would love to explore all options to get you back in the game. Thank you for the detailed information on the issues you are experiencing. We would like for you to try a hard reboot.

  1. Remove any unsupported third-party accessories that may affect boot (such as external battery packs, accessories that plug into the USB-C port, etc.)
  2. Hard Reboot the headset
    1. Hold down the power button and volume down button for 30 seconds until you hear the boot-up sound
    2. If the boot-up sound is not heard:
      1. Hold the power and volume (-) button down simultaneously until the boot screen loads on your headset.
      2. Use the volume buttons on your headset to highlight "Boot Device" and press the power button.
      3. Use the volume buttons on your headset to highlight Yes and press the power button.

If after doing the hard reboot the issue continues, lets try a factory reset. Please get back to us after you have given these steps a try. We look forward to your reply.

I performed the factory reset and after doing that and booting it back up it showed the screen that tells you to pull the tabs out of the controllers for maybe 5-6 seconds before turning black except for the white dot at the top of the screen.  It also displayed a headset icon and the numbers 39840.

Hello @BabyBones09. We truly understand the need for the issue with your Quest 2 display to be resolved as soon as possible. Since we've already factory reset the device, we suggest trying the options below as a way to make sure we've checked all possible reasons for this issue.

  1. Make sure to charge the headset. If the headset has no charge, you’ll see nothing but a black screen. Plug the headset into a compatible USB charger and leave it alone for a while. If it doesn’t seem to be charging, try a different charger, or make sure you’re using a compatible charger.
  2. Check to see if the app sees your headset, and try launching a game from the app. After launching the game, put your headset on and check to see if the black screen problem has been corrected.
  3. If you have tried charging the headset and still see nothing but a black screen, and you’re sure you’re using a compatible charger, leave it alone for at least 30 minutes while plugged in. If the headset is attempting to update, leaving it alone while plugged into power may allow it to finish the update and return to regular operation.
  4. Make sure you've successfully logged in to the Meta Quest app, your phone sees the headset, and the correct wifi network is connected. Try uninstalling and reinstalling the Meta Quest mobile app. Directions here.
  5. Try opening the menus on your headset. Try pressing the menu button on your left controller and the Oculus button on the right controller. If this gives you access to the menu, try opening an app to see if that fixes the black screen problem.
  6. Check the proximity sensor. Between the lenses in your headset, you’ll find a small proximity sensor. Try covering the sensor with your thumb to see if the black screen goes away. If that doesn’t work, try cleaning the sensor with a dry microfiber cloth.
  7. We would also suggest trying to pair the headset with your phone using the code that's appearing on the screen to see if that works for you.

Please let us know if these options worked or not so that we can explore a better solution for you. I hope to hear from you soon.
