Does a factory reset erase everything?

If I had to reset the device like how I first got it do I lose everything?

But please note the information on cloud backup - make sure you enable that before the reset if you want to keep your save points in games.

Ok well that’s why everything gone we couldn’t do nothing but reset it it was only showing a black screen

If you didn't back up to the cloud, you'd only lose your save game data. All your purchases are secure on your account. Make sure you didn't accidentally create a new account, I've noticed many users do this after a factory reset.
